Strawberries Will Become More Expensive in the Context of Global Warming

Using new analysis, researchers found that a 3-degree F increase in temperature could reduce strawberry yields by up to 40 percent.

This study shows how climate change can directly impact the foods we love, highlighting the importance of sustainable farming practices to maintain a stable food supply, said study author Dr Poornima Unnikrishnan.

Sustainable farming practices can include optimizing irrigation to ensure adequate water supply during heat waves, using drip irrigation and planning operations to avoid peak heat periods, as well as using shade trees and installing shade structures to minimize heat stress.

The team decided to start their analysis with strawberries because of their popularity and very short shelf life. And the results of this study show the potential implications for the availability of imported products from California.

The researchers used a model that predicts yield loss by linking air temperature anomalies to strawberry yield. This process allows for greater variability to be measured over time and provides the most accurate findings to date.

We hope that a deeper understanding of the impact of rising temperatures on crop yields will help governments and farmers develop sustainable agricultural practices. Farmers need to adopt new strategies to cope with global warming, Ponnambalam said.

Strawberries are one of the most lucrative commodities for the California and US economies . The strawberry market alone is expected to be worth more than $3 billion in 2022.
