Suspension bridge cable breaks in China, dozens injured and killed

Five people were killed and 24 others injured in a suspension bridge accident at a scenic spot in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Xinhua News Agency quoted local authorities as saying that the accident occurred at a scenic area in Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China, at 6:18 p.m. on August 6.

At that time, a suspension cable of the bridge suddenly broke, causing the bridge to tilt, causing a total of 29 people to fall from the bridge. Witnesses recounted the terrifying moment when they fell, recalling the feeling of panic and fear.

Helicopters were also mobilized to participate in rescue work.

The accident killed five people and injured 24 others. Two of the injured were in serious condition.

All the injured were rushed to local hospitals for treatment. Fortunately, none of them are in life-threatening condition.

The scenic area is temporarily closed. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
