To concretize Directive No. 17/CT-TTg dated June 6, 2025, of the Prime Minister and realize the spirit of Resolution 29-NQ/TW on fundamental and comprehensive educational reform, the Ministry of Education and Training has directed and guided the organization of two-session-per-day teaching for general education starting from the 2025-2026 school year. Accordingly, the first session will focus on teaching the general education curriculum, while the second session will include activities to reinforce learning and promote the holistic development of students' morals, intellect, physical health, and aesthetics.

Expanding opportunities for holistic development for students.
Mr. Duong Xuan Binh, Principal of Phu Binh High School ( Thai Nguyen province), affirmed: Implementing a two-session-per-day teaching schedule is an important step, very much in line with the trend of educational reform, helping students to learn and develop more comprehensively, while also reducing the pressure of extra tutoring outside of school.
In that spirit, Phu Binh High School has determined that the first session is for implementing the main general education curriculum; the second session is for organizing supplementary educational activities, developing competencies, nurturing gifted students, providing remedial instruction for students who have not met requirements, teaching life skills, financial education, art education, physical education, STEM, career guidance, artificial intelligence, foreign languages, etc., according to the holistic development orientation suitable to the students' psychology and physiology.
Besides, it must also be acknowledged that in practice, the school still faces certain difficulties. "Due to the actual conditions regarding the number of teachers for each subject and the requirements in scheduling lessons, organizing two-session-per-day teaching has not yet been able to meet expectations," Mr. Duong Xuan Binh shared.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai, Principal of Tan Thinh Secondary School (Phan Dinh Phung Ward, Thai Nguyen Province), shared: The policy of teaching two sessions per day opens up better opportunities for students to develop comprehensively in terms of abilities and qualities, through diverse and appropriate educational activities in line with the spirit of the 2018 General Education Program.
Accordingly, Tan Thinh Secondary School consulted with parents and, based on student registrations, selected several activities for the afternoon session, such as: talent club activities, advanced training for gifted students, and review sessions for graduating students… Thanks to these afternoon educational activities, the students were very enthusiastic and motivated in their studies and personal development.
However, according to Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai, the reality of the school, as well as some educational institutions in the area, shows that in order for the organization of two-session-per-day teaching to be effective, the education sector and all levels need to continue to pay attention to better meeting the teacher staffing quotas, classroom conditions, facilities, and teaching equipment for schools.

Ensure practicality
Mr. Dao Xuan Tan, Deputy Director of the Thai Nguyen Department of Education and Training, affirmed that the implementation of two-session-per-day teaching by the education sector plays an important role in concretizing and realizing the spirit of Resolution 29-NQ/TW on fundamental and comprehensive educational reform.
In order to ensure consistent and effective implementation, the Thai Nguyen Department of Education and Training has guided educational institutions to develop school education plans that are practical, flexible, feasible, and appropriate to the existing teaching staff, facilities, and teaching equipment.
Accordingly, the plan should clearly demonstrate the effective mobilization and utilization of resources to organize two-session-per-day teaching at eligible educational institutions, contributing to improving the quality of program implementation in accordance with Directive No. 17/CT-TTg dated June 6, 2025, of the Prime Minister and guiding documents from the Ministry of Education and Training, the Provincial People's Committee, and the Department of Education and Training; it must specify the content, duration, time, location, and target student groups for the two-session-per-day teaching program; and assign teachers rationally and scientifically, ensuring compliance with working time regulations and suitability to the teaching conditions of each school.
"The development and implementation of the school's educational plan must prioritize the quality and results of teaching and learning activities; be consistent with the practical situation regarding facilities and teaching staff; and ensure absolute safety for students in terms of security, health, nutrition, and school hygiene," Mr. Dao Xuan Tan emphasized.
