Iran was rated higher than Qatar but lost and was eliminated from the 2023 Asian Cup. Coach Amir Ghalenoei was disappointed with the result of this match and apologized to fans at home.
" From a technical point of view, we had a dedicated match. However, this tournament saw many unexpected teams eliminated, including Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Japan. I take full responsibility for this defeat. Today is the worst day of my life, " said coach Amir Ghalenoei.
Iran were considered the favourites to win the tournament after South Korea and Japan were eliminated. They opened the scoring through Sardar Azmoun. Qatar equalised thanks to a lucky goal from Jassem Gaber.

The hosts took the lead late in the first half through Akram Afif's long-range strike. The chase continued as Alireza Jahanbakhsh equalised at 2-2 before Almoez Ali sealed a 3-2 win for Qatar.
" We missed a lot of chances throughout the game, but the way we played in the second half was one of Iran's best performances. We had eight corners, but this is football. You don't take advantage of your chances and get punished. This happens to us ," regretted coach Amir Ghalenoei.
Coach Amir Ghalenoei emphasized that most of the players live abroad but still try their best to practice and compete for the country.

Meanwhile, Qatar coach Marquez Lopez was excited: " This is an unpredictable match but I think Qatar played well. The players have no regrets for the effort they put in. They implemented my ideas and philosophy correctly so they deserve my thanks. Now, we have one last step to defend the title ."
Qatar faced Jordan in the final. Coach Hussein Ammouta's team caused a surprise in the knockout round when they overcame strong contenders for the title such as Iraq and South Korea.
The final will take place at 10:00 p.m. (Vietnam time) on February 10, at Lusail Stadium.
