Letting AI replace teachers in grading students: Is it "indulging laziness"?

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí31/08/2024

AI replaces teachers in grading

The move was proposed as a solution to reduce the workload for teachers. However, this plan is facing many concerns because it could make teachers and students increasingly dependent on AI. Some even think that this move is no different from a signal of acceptance of laziness in teaching and learning activities.

The plan is currently in draft form and is awaiting stakeholder feedback and a vote. If approved, schools in the UK would send course content to technology companies, which would then feed the data to train AI to grade students’ homework and tests.

Peter Kyle, head of the UK Department for Science , Innovation and Technology, said that having AI assist teachers in grading student assignments and tests would have many benefits. For example, teachers would have more time to do creative work.

However, there are currently conflicting opinions that bringing AI into school teaching activities and replacing teachers with some tasks will gradually replace the role of teachers with AI.

Many schools are now facing the phenomenon of students using AI to complete their homework. Letting AI grade students' work may lead to the phenomenon of "AI grading AI", both teachers and students will increasingly rely on AI in teaching and learning activities.

According to a new survey conducted by British authorities this month, 48% of teachers in the UK have used AI in their work, although these tools have not been "standardized" to really support teachers effectively.

If the draft to bring AI into schools is passed, a budget of 3 million pounds (more than 98 billion VND) will be used by the British Government to develop more complete AI tools to effectively serve teachers.

The testing process showed that when AI was provided with full knowledge content of subjects, the accuracy level when grading students' assignments and tests was up to 92%.

Currently, artificial intelligence is being used in schools in the UK to varying degrees. In August, David Game College in London (UK) officially opened a class without teachers. In literature, math, physics and chemistry lessons, students at David Game College do not need to bring textbooks, the class will not have teachers to teach.

Students will use laptops and headphones to receive lectures and interact with the "AI teacher". The teacher present in the class will only perform the task of maintaining classroom discipline.

Controversial

Bringing AI into schools to support teachers remains a controversial topic in the UK (Photo: DM).

Chris McGovern, president of the Campaign for Real Education, a nonprofiteducation organization, is not in favor of this approach. He believes that introducing AI into teaching and learning would be a “green light for laziness,” making teachers increasingly “redundant” in schools.

"We can never replace a good teacher who inspires students to learn with artificial intelligence (AI). No matter how modern technology is, it cannot compare to a teacher who can sense the classroom situation and the state of students to have effective interactions," said Mr. McGovern.

Mr. McGovern also emphasized the importance of bonding between teachers and students, and between students in a classroom. Bonding between individuals in a group will not be possible if each student only knows how to "bury their heads" in the screen and learn in their own way. Educational activities will then become indifferent.

Meanwhile, Jasmine Schembri, founder of Luna, an artificial intelligence application that supports primary school students in learning and movement, assessed that this draft is very important.

"This move could have huge benefits in helping teachers reduce their workload. My personal experience shows that AI is just a tool that can support work and life. Everyone can rest assured that AI cannot replace experts and professionals in professional fields," said Ms. Schembri.
