The village was peaceful, suddenly 4 children died from drowning. The heartbreaking cries of many relatives when the children sadly passed away.

When I went to the family to find out what happened, I learned that on the afternoon of May 20, a group of female students, including 3 students in class 5A and 1 student in class 2A - Ham Phu 1 Primary School (Ham Thuan Bac District, Binh Thuan ) invited each other to the lotus pond to pick lotus, then jumped into the Song Quao irrigation canal to bathe. Unlike other days, it was raining heavily that day, the water rose higher than an adult's head. The students jumped into the canal to bathe without realizing that the water was deep and the current was strong. Moments later, all 4 students drowned, some of them drifted down the canal for a kilometer.

Everyone in the village heard the bad news and went to the canal to search for them, but in vain. Among the drowned children, there was a child whose family situation was very difficult. He was only 12 years old but had to help his parents take care of 2 younger siblings. There was a girl who was only 8 years old, the only child of a single mother.

The homeroom teacher of class 5A (the class with 3 female students who drowned) told me that 2 days before, during the flag salute, the school reminded all students in the school not to bathe in rivers, streams, or canals when summer vacation began. But the heartbreaking incident still happened, making the whole school heartbroken when they lost 4 students in one afternoon.

The teacher's words "losing 4 students in just one afternoon" haunted my mind on the way home. What should we do to prevent these heartbreaking deaths from children drowning? Currently, all schools have introduced swimming into their curriculum, for both primary and secondary school students. However, due to the lack of swimming pools, teaching swimming in schools is still a formality and not thorough. Therefore, in addition to popularizing swimming for children, families and schools need to coordinate to equip children with life skills to prevent heartbreaking accidents from drowning.
