North Korea's First Lady reappears after 18 months of absence

North Korean First Lady Ri Sol Ju and her husband, leader Kim Jong Un, attended the opening ceremony of the Kalma coastal resort.

According to Yonhap , this is the first time North Korean First Lady Ri Sol Ju has appeared in public after about 18 months of absence.

Photos released by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) showed Ri alongside leader Kim Jong Un and their daughter, Ju Ae, at the ceremony on June 24. North Korean First Lady Ri Sol Ju wore a white shirt, black trousers and carried a Gucci handbag.

Ri's previous media appearance was at a New Year's performance on January 1, 2024. Ri has since disappeared from North Korean state media, while her daughter Ju Ae has appeared alongside leader Kim Jong Un at important public events.

Yang Moo Jin, president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, South Korea, said that Ri may have limited her public appearances to shift attention to Ju Ae, Kim Jong Un's likely successor.

An official at South Korea's Unification Ministry also said that North Korea may be trying to draw attention to Ju Ae as Ms. Ri has been absent from the media.
