The first is to communicate the great value of Ngoc Linh ginseng so that people know and understand, thereby proactively changing their thinking and working methods, seeing the benefits and participating in planting. The results are that the Xo Dang people have sold their buffaloes and cows, borrowed money from banks to invest in ginseng. Local authorities have joined in supporting through preferential loan support policies; connecting large enterprises to build production chains, to help people have more resources and techniques to expand investment. From waiting and relying on the support of the State, only knowing how to produce rice and cassava, the Xo Dang people have built a foundation of billion-dollar ginseng gardens on the top of Ngoc Linh mountain.
Amidst the rapid climate change, the protection of ginseng’s habitat is of great importance. Every year, Tu Mo Rong district mobilizes capital to cover bare hills in buffer zones for ginseng cultivation. Hundreds of hectares of buffer zone forests have sprung up, helping to keep the cold air in the core ginseng growing area, helping ginseng grow well.
Product output is an issue that is being implemented continuously. The province and district have organized activities to call for and attract investment in projects, including Ngoc Linh ginseng. In addition to the stable output from local businesses, the district has built ginseng garden tours for people to directly sell ginseng to customers; organized ginseng markets to find more partners, helping people have more options to sell ginseng.
The work of protecting ginseng brands, preventing theft and profiteering from ginseng, helping people and businesses feel secure in growing ginseng has been resolutely implemented from the province to the district. The thefts have been vigorously investigated by the police. As a result, many ginseng thieves and fake ginseng traders have been caught. Most recently in October 2024, the Tu Mo Rong and Dak Glei district police cracked down on 2 theft cases with 3 participants, with evidence of 388 tubers. To increase the ability to manage ginseng gardens, Tu Mo Rong district has called on telecommunications units to install 2 broadcasting stations in 2 weak-signal villages, Dak Don (Mang Ri commune) and Tu Tho (Te Xang commune) with a value of about 1 billion VND. Thanks to that, the Xo Dang people have installed surveillance cameras, just sitting at home and turning on their phones to be able to watch the garden, saving effort and time.
The synchronous implementation of groups of solutions has helped the process of turning the "national treasure" into a national livelihood have a clear breakthrough. The area of Ngoc Linh ginseng has increased rapidly, currently the district has 2,400 hectares, which is the basis for implementing a tourism model to visit Ngoc Linh ginseng gardens, helping people sell ginseng at high prices, while tourists can admire the living environment of ginseng plants, and buy real ginseng to improve their health.
The number of people growing ginseng and the area of ginseng owned by the people have continuously increased rapidly. Not only the wealthy but also the poor and near-poor households grow ginseng and benefit from it. Up to now, the Xo Dang people in Tu Mo Rong district have owned more than 84 hectares of Ngoc Linh ginseng. Thanks to that, billionaires from ginseng have been formed, and the poor have escaped poverty thanks to Ngoc Linh ginseng.
Ginseng is also processed into dozens of products to serve all classes of society. From being "labeled" as something only the rich could afford, now every household can use it through products ranging from low-end products such as energy drinks, tea to valuable products such as ginseng honey, ginseng bird's nest, ginseng extract, ginseng wine, and ginseng roots.
The process of building Ngoc Linh ginseng into a national treasure has been initially successful, but in reality, it is still possible to achieve better results.
The reason is that in addition to the 6 communes of Tu Mo Rong district and 2 communes of Dak Glei district that have been granted the Ngoc Linh geographical indication for ginseng root products, there are many other localities that are also suitable for growing ginseng. This shows that there is still a lot of room to expand the ginseng area and if expanded, it will help more communities benefit; consumers will have more products to use.
The good news for the people is that recently, the Provincial People's Committee has approved the Project to expand the scope of protection of the geographical indication "Ngoc Linh" for ginseng root products in the province, to be implemented immediately in 2025. The project will conduct research, build a scientific and practical basis for registering to expand the scope of protection of the geographical indication "Ngoc Linh" for ginseng root products in 11 other communes of Tu Mo Rong, Dak Glei, Kon Plong and Kon Ray districts, with the specific goal of the geographical indication "Ngoc Linh" for expanded ginseng root products of Kon Tum province being granted a certificate of protection by the Department of Intellectual Property according to regulations.
The above decision of the Provincial People's Committee is assessed to bring great benefits to the people in participating in ginseng cultivation, thereby soon turning the national treasure into a national livelihood. For example, in Tu Mo Rong district, there are 4 communes included in the study to expand the geographical indication of Ngoc Linh, namely Tu Mo Rong, Dak Ha, Dak Sao, Dak Ro Ong. These are communes with large forest areas, soil, and climate favorable for growing Ngoc Linh ginseng. In fact, people have also experimented with growing Ngoc Linh ginseng and the ginseng grows and develops very well. If these communes are recognized and granted the geographical indication of Ngoc Linh for ginseng root products, thousands of households will be able to grow ginseng legally, helping them reach their dream of getting rich on the mountains that have been attached to them for generations.
In Tu Mo Rong district, the locality and people are currently looking forward to the project being implemented soon. The locality is ready to cooperate with the units assigned to research so that the project can be completed soon, helping the people get rich on their own resources, so that everyone, every household can easily use Ngoc Linh ginseng.
