Teaching ta leu singing and choi singing during the weekly flag salute ceremony at a school in Son Ha district, Quang Ngai province
According to the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province, the folk art treasure of the Hre people is very rich, in which the most prominent are the Ta Leu and Ca Choi melodies. This is a type of performance performed in many different situations such as festivals, weddings, when working in the fields, gathering around the fire or even when alone (except when there is a funeral in the family).
Ta Leu melodies are often narrative and have a clear rhythm; while Ca Choi is a form of love singing, improvised on the spot in a call-and-response style, and spoken singing. The content expressed is diverse, from love between couples, family stories to pride in the homeland and country... Both melodies are often performed in combination with traditional musical instruments such as the Vroac and Krâu... with a rustic, familiar sound, imbued with indigenous character.
Quang Ngai province believes that the two folk songs above have high historical, cultural and scientific value, clearly expressing the unique identity of the Hre people, and at the same time contributing to enriching the treasure of Vietnam's intangible cultural heritage.
To preserve and promote traditional cultural values, Quang Ngai province has directed specialized units to build heritage dossiers according to regulations, as a basis for proposing the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to consider and include hat ta leu and ca choi in the list of national intangible cultural heritages.
