DeepSeek has a competitive advantage thanks to Huawei's domestic chip
DeepSeek R1, a large language model (LLM) from DeepSeek, has surpassed its competitors to become the top application in 51 countries. The secret to its success lies in its strategy of combining Nvidia's H100 chip (for model training) and Huawei's Ascend 910C (for inference and feedback generation).
Using the Ascend 910C chip helps DeepSeek significantly reduce costs compared to using only Nvidia chips, while reducing its dependence on American technology. Although the 910C is not powerful enough to train large-scale AI models, it fully meets the needs of inference, helping DeepSeek maintain high performance at a lower cost.
Huawei is working on a more powerful Ascend 920C chip to compete directly with Nvidia's flagship Blackwell B200 AI chip. If successful, Huawei will provide Chinese AI companies with an effective domestic alternative, boosting the development of China's AI industry.
DeepSeek’s rise shows China’s determination to take the lead in AI. Its cost-effective strategy, combined with Huawei’s hardware advancements, is posing a major challenge to US tech giants.
The US-China AI war is not just a technology race, but also a battle for market share and global influence. This competition will spur innovation, making AI more widespread and accessible to users around the world.
