Sri Ranganathaswamy is situated within a complex surrounded by seven massive concentric walls, forming seven layers of defensive fortifications, also known as prakarams. Each layer of walls is built in a distinct architectural style, setting it apart from most other temples in India. Originally constructed during the Chola period in the first century AD, Sri Ranganathaswamy was expanded and renovated under the Chola, Pandya, Hoysala, and Vijayanagara dynasties.
The temple hall features over 1,000 intricately carved stone columns depicting dancing fairies, mythological figures, and elaborate decorative motifs. The columns were constructed of granite during the Vijayanagara period (1336-1565). The hall is designed in a theatrical style with wide walkways and rows of columns arranged harmoniously. Thanks to its vast space, it was once a venue for religious ceremonies and community events. According to UNESCO, although the temple is also known as the "Temple of 1,000 Columns," the actual number is 953.
This religious complex also boasts over 50 shrines, 9 sacred pools, and is surrounded by the Kaveri River – considered the "Dakshin Ganga," the Ganges of southern India.
From the outside, the temple stands out with its colorful Gopuram towers. Gopurams are characteristic of Dravidian architecture, featuring vibrant colors and intricate carvings. The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple has a total of 21 Gopuram towers, each with its own unique features and harmonious design.
The Rajagopuram Tower is the main and tallest tower of the temple complex. It is also considered a "masterpiece of color." The tower is adorned with carvings of male and female deities, epic figures, and mythical creatures.

Upon entering the temple, visitors will encounter a statue of Ranganath Swamy, an incarnation of Vishnu, carved in a relaxed reclining position on the serpent Ananta. The statue is painted black and decorated with fresh flowers, silk fabrics, and jewelry. Next to it, the temple also has a dedicated area for the goddess Ranganayaki, an incarnation of Lakshmi, Vishnu's wife.
Unlike traditional temples with only one main sanctuary, the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple complex is built like a self-sufficient mini-city, serving as both a place of worship and a living space for the local people. Within the complex are various areas such as a market, shrines to deities, monks' quarters, and residential houses.
