Direct admission by academic transcript
Speaking to Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters on the sidelines of the event, Mr. Lam Minh Khoa, Director of Admissions at the University of Melbourne in Vietnam, said that this was the third year the school had organized an information day in Vietnam and for the first time, representatives and professors from various faculties came directly to share and answer questions from students.
Regarding the admission process, Mr. Khoa said the school does not consider factors such as extracurricular activities, awards, essays, interviews, etc., but evaluates entirely based on the candidate's average score in grade 11 or 12, which usually must be 7.5 points or higher. "After registering, you are required to take a 9-month university preparatory course (foundation), or only about 5 months if your average score is above 8," Mr. Khoa said.
Mr. Lam Minh Khoa (standing), Director of Admissions at the University of Melbourne in Vietnam, shares general information about the school.
Explaining this, the director of admissions at the University of Melbourne in Vietnam said that the school wants to evaluate candidates based on real, accessible, reliable, non-controversial data and ensure the highest accuracy in the screening process. "If interviewing candidates or reading essays, only 1-2 examiners can score and the results can be right or wrong," Mr. Khoa emphasized.
According to Mr. Khoa, the University of Melbourne also has a policy of directly recruiting Vietnamese students from 12 specialized schools and key schools in major cities based on their grade 12 academic records. The schools on the list are the top units in terms of admission scores to grade 10, high school graduation exam scores and have many former students who achieved good results while studying abroad at the school.
"Next year, the University of Melbourne plans to add about 10 more schools to the direct admission list, nearly doubling the total number of schools. These schools will also be located in three major cities: Hanoi , Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City," Mr. Khoa shared.

Scholarships up to 100% for excellent students
According to Mr. Lam Minh Khoa, the University of Melbourne currently offers many different levels of scholarships for international students, notably 50% and 100% tuition scholarships at the undergraduate level. Accordingly, candidates need to achieve an average score of 9 or higher with a very high SAT score (a type of standardized test), and the scholarship will be considered from top to bottom until the quota is full with a very high level of competition.
Ms. Rebecca Fitzgerald, representative of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, University of Melbourne, advises Vietnamese students.
"As long as you meet the requirements, you will automatically receive the scholarship without having to submit any additional documents. Because the scholarship focuses entirely on the score criteria, my advice is to develop a review strategy early, possibly from grade 10 as in some cases I have advised, and spend a lot of time improving your score as high as possible," said Mr. Khoa.
Adding more perspective, Ms. Rebecca Fitzgerald, representative of the Faculty of Liberal Arts at the University of Melbourne, said that in addition to the school level, faculties can also award different levels of scholarships to students, notably 20% and 50% of tuition fees. The evaluation criteria are still based entirely on grades, but it should be noted that there are some parties that do not award these scholarships, such as the Faculty of Liberal Arts.
According to a representative of the University of Melbourne, every year about 100-200 Vietnamese international students are admitted to the school, and currently there are about 520 Vietnamese students studying here. "The school and professors evaluate Vietnamese international students as always being hard-working, having a good attitude towards studying as well as achieving high results in exams," Mr. Lam Minh Khoa shared.
Ms. Fiona Burns, representative of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne, introduced the training program to students and parents.
According to statistics from the Australian Department of Education, there were 710,893 international students studying in Australia as of July 2023. Of these, Vietnam had a total of 27,764 international students, ranking 6th after China, India, Nepal, Colombia and the Philippines. To live in Australia at the present time, the Australian Department of Home Affairs advises international students to ensure finances of about 25,000 USD (600 million VND) per year.
