Need a coordination mechanism between family - school - society

To improve the quality of student education, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong said that it is necessary to soon issue a new circular on the coordination mechanism between family - school - society, replacing Circular 55 (2011); clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of each subject according to Resolution 71; regulating the content, methods, time, and coordination process; suitable to the characteristics of each locality and school level.

Pressure surrounds students

Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang, representative of the "Desk Drawer" project, a project established by high school students since 2020, recognizes that today's students are facing many mental health problems and pressures from life, study, and family. Although many schools have psychological counseling rooms, not many students go there due to fear, inferiority complex, and fear that other students will see and think that they have psychological problems. Therefore, they have implemented "Desk Drawer" to create a friendly space for students to confidently share their personal problems.

However, the school, as the center of organizing educational activities for students, helping students acquire knowledge, practice skills and experience capacity development activities, needs to pay attention, understand and guide students. The family, where children learn the first lessons about personality, habits, lifestyle and values, cannot stand aside in the development process of each student.

It is worth noting that many parents today still consider education to be the primary responsibility of schools. A 2024 survey by the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences with more than 3,200 parents showed that 46% of parents regularly communicated with teachers about their children's learning situation; 60% of high school students said that their parents did not or rarely participated in learning activities at school. Only 42% participated in skills education activities organized by the school, and 38% of teachers commented that parents did not clearly understand the role of companionship in education.

In particular, 18% of students show signs of emotional disturbance due to lack of sharing from family and teachers. This shows the need for a true coordination mechanism between family and school. This should be seen not as “helping the school” but as the responsibility of the family itself for the future of their children.

Need specific and unified coordination

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Doan, President of the Vietnam Association for Promoting Education, Circular 28 stipulates the responsibility of homeroom teachers in coordinating with parents but lacks specific instructions. The content of family-school-society coordination is still vague, causing teachers to have limited soft skills, while many families are broken, traditional values are fading, negatively affecting children. Ms. Doan also pointed out the challenge when school education is still heavy on knowledge; moral education is theoretical, lacking experience. The disease of achievements persists, life skills are not focused on teaching... A series of problems from the family, school, and society have a strong impact on students' thoughts and feelings.

From the challenges of educating children in the new context, Ms. Nguyen Thi Doan proposed to build a legal framework and institutionalize the coordination relationship through a specific commitment contract, suitable for the "green education" model, towards global citizens. In particular, Ms. Doan emphasized the role of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) in clearly guiding the responsibilities of families, creating a legal framework for the "green education triangle" in the context of digitalization and greening.

With nearly 26 million students, the Ministry of Education and Training said it is necessary to quickly issue regulations for close coordination between the parties and train teachers; this content needs to be included in teacher training. It is expected that the Department of General Education or the Department of Students will be considered and assigned to preside over this task.
