Health experts say that it doesn't have to be a long walk or complicated exercise, just a light walk after a meal can also bring many health benefits, according to the news site Woman And Home .
Nutrition coach Emma Bord (working in the US) said the first main benefit of walking after eating is the positive impact on the digestive system.
Gentle walking after meals is beneficial for people with diabetes
“Walking can aid digestion by stimulating the stomach and intestines, causing food to move more quickly, stimulating digestion, as well as helping to relieve indigestion, heartburn and constipation,” says Bord.
Additionally, taking a light walk after a meal is particularly beneficial for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. To elaborate, Bord says that light exercise after a meal such as walking can reduce the spike in blood sugar.
“This spike happens automatically after eating carbohydrates, as they are broken down into sugar. Gentle exercise after a meal can reduce blood sugar levels and keep blood sugar under control,” says Bord.
The expert also recommends that people wait about 15 to 60 minutes after finishing a meal before starting to walk. Because this is the time when blood sugar levels tend to peak. Walking lightly at this time will help the muscles absorb more glucose from the meal, regulate blood sugar levels and aid digestion.
