Just a day after Botafogo knocked out the reigning UEFA Champions League champions, it was another Brazilian team's turn to cause a shock at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup™. Flamengo came from behind to win 3-1 against UEFA Conference League champions Chelsea.
This is only the second time a South American team has beaten a European side by more than one goal in the history of the Club World Cup. Previously, only Vasco da Gama had done the same when they beat Manchester United 3-1 in 2000.
This victory helped Flamengo rise to the top of Group D with 6 points and put one foot in the knockout round, while pushing Chelsea into a corner. In the final match, coach Enzo Maresca's team will have to win big against Esperance Tunis to have a chance to continue.

The match started with promise for Chelsea as new Blues signing Liam Delap almost scored on his first start. After a clever through ball from Enzo Fernandez, the former Ipswich player unleashed a powerful shot that was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Agustín Rossi.
Chelsea fans didn't have to wait long to celebrate. Taking advantage of a chaotic midfield situation, Pedro Neto broke through with great speed and coolly beat Rossi to give the English representative the lead in the 13th minute.
Despite falling behind, Flamengo were undaunted. The Brazilians quickly took control of the game and pressed their opponents. At the end of the first half, they almost equalized if Gerson's header had not been blocked by Levi Colwill on the goal line.
In the second half, the game was completely in Flamengo's hands. Within just three minutes, the South American representative had turned the tables. Bruno Henrique started the comeback when he took advantage of Gonzalo Plata's header to put the ball into the net from close range in the 62nd minute. Before Chelsea could regain their composure, they conceded the second goal after Danilo's shot from a high ball on the right wing in the 65th minute.
Disaster continued to strike the Premier League representative when substitute striker Nicolas Jackson was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on defender Ayrton Lucas. With the advantage of one more man, Flamengo did not miss the opportunity to finish off their opponents. Wallace Yan scored the third goal in the final minutes of stoppage time, ending any hopes of Chelsea getting a point.
