On May 21, Bloomberg Terminal - Bloomberg's financial data service - experienced a technical problem that paralyzed many functions and temporarily interrupted British and European Union (EU) bond auctions.
Bloomberg Terminal – considered the "treasure" of the media empire founded by American billionaire Michael Bloomberg in 1981 – currently has about 350,000 users worldwide .
The service provides live price information on stocks, currencies, commodities, bonds and other financial instruments, and supports news, analysis and messaging between investors.
However, on the morning of May 21, many of Bloomberg's functions stopped working or were severely slowed down.
In a statement later, Bloomberg spokesman Ty Trippet said that service systems were returning to normal operations and Terminal functionality had been restored following the service disruption.
Earlier, at around 9:00 GMT, or 6:00 p.m. Vietnam time, Bloomberg's support team confirmed a technical issue that affected many customers and that technicians were working to fix it. The service gradually resumed about an hour later, but was still slow.
The European Commission (EC) has announced a one-hour delay in the EUB bond auction to ensure the auction runs smoothly.
The UK’s Public Debt Management Office was also forced to extend the bidding period due to a Bloomberg system failure that affected the entire market. The auction then ended at 10:30 GMT./.
