If we consider a common admission score for all combinations, candidates using combinations A01, B00 and A01 will have less chance than A00, C00.
Not to mention the combinations with subjects such as geography, economic education and law. This differentiation is mainly concentrated at the score level of 24 and above. From 18 to 22 points, the number of candidates in the combinations is still very large, the competition is very high.
The test scores of the groups decreased sharply and the difference was large.
This year, the Ministry of Education and Training did not announce the score distribution according to the five traditional admission groups: math - physics - chemistry (A00), math - physics - English (A01), math - chemistry - biology (B00), math - literature - English (D01) and literature - history - geography (C00). According to data analyzed by Tuoi Tre from high school graduation exam scores, the scores of these groups all decreased sharply at the level of 24 points or higher.
Statistics show that in 2024, in group A00, there were more than 101,000 candidates who scored 24 points or more, and more than 13,000 candidates who scored 27 points. However, this year, only nearly 29,000 candidates scored 24 points, and the number of candidates who scored 27 points also decreased by half.
If last year 23 points was the level with the most candidates achieving with more than 40,000, this year the exam scores were more evenly distributed, the level with the most candidates achieving around 18 - 19 points with more than 13,000 candidates. Thus, just counting the score with the most candidates achieving this year, it decreased by 4 to 5 points compared to 2024. The competition is concentrated in the score range from 20 to 23 with about 46,000 candidates.
Group C00 also has a sharp decrease in the number of candidates with 24 points or more compared to last year, but the number is still abundant. Last year, there were more than 195,000 candidates with 24 points or more, this year there are only nearly 56,000.
At the 27-point mark, the number also dropped sharply from more than 42,000 in 2024 to just over 9,200 this year. The mark with the most candidates in 2024 was 22 with more than 80,000 candidates, this year it dropped to around 19 - 20 points. Thus, the fierce competition is in the segment from 20 to 23 points with about 90,000 candidates.
As for group B00, because the number of candidates registering for the biology exam this year has decreased by more than 4 times compared to last year, in addition to the exam questions, the number of candidates also has a significant impact on the reduction in admission scores. This is the main group recruiting students for the medical and health majors at major universities. With this year's exam scores, it is likely that the benchmark scores for many health majors will no longer be as high as in 2024.
Of which, from more than 71,000 candidates scoring 24 or higher last year, this year the number has decreased by 12 times, to only more than 5,900 candidates. The number of candidates scoring 27 or higher has decreased from more than 6,500 last year to only 1,055.
Not only that, due to the sharp decrease in the number of candidates taking the exam, other parameters of this combination have also decreased dramatically. If in 2024 the score with the most candidates was 22 with more than 44,000 candidates, this year it has decreased to 16 - 17 points and only more than 3,700 candidates reached this level. About 20,000 candidates have test scores from 18 to 23.
This year's math and English exams are considered to be the most difficult, with the highest scores among the exams. The results of these two subjects are the lowest compared to the other subjects in the admission combination. In particular, candidates who choose to take the exam and consider combinations that include both math and English will have less chance to compete in the excellent score segment.
For example, with the A01 group, last year there were 80,000 candidates who scored 24 points or more, but this year there are only more than 13,000, much less than A00. The 27 point level has dropped even more, from 9,000 to more than 1,100.
Last year, the highest score among candidates was around 22-23 points, this year the highest score was 18-19 points. There were about 42,000 candidates with scores from 20 to 23. This number is similar to the number of candidates in group A00, so the fierce competition is concentrated around this score.
With the D01 group, the number of scores from 24 and above, especially 27 points, decreased the most miserably. There were more than 163,000 candidates who scored 24 and above in the 2024 exam, this year there are only more than 13,000. The number of candidates who scored 27 and above last year overwhelmed the A00 and A01 groups with more than 18,000 candidates achieving them. However, this year there are only 276 candidates - much lower than the number of candidates with the same score of A00 and A01.
However, this group has more than 130,000 candidates with scores from 20 to 23, which is a much larger number than groups A00 and A01. D01 is at a disadvantage in competition at the score of 26 - 27 but has an advantage at the score below 24.
Overall would be unfair?
Currently, many universities such as Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, Ho Chi Minh City University of Banking, Finance - Marketing... only consider a common admission score for all combinations. In which, economic and technology majors often consider combinations A00, A01, D01; social science majors consider C00 and D01 together.
Considering a common benchmark score in this year's context poses a risk of unfairness to groups of candidates.
The head of the training department of a university in Ho Chi Minh City said that for many years the school has considered separate benchmark scores for each combination to ensure differentiation as well as fairness for candidates of each combination.
Candidates taking the same exam on the same scale will compete based on their scores. Each exam has different levels of differentiation and difficulty, which when considered in general will be advantageous for one candidate and disadvantageous for another, especially in the context of this year.
"The score distribution of the subjects has a very large difference. Meanwhile, this year, candidates only take 4 subjects, the combination of admission combinations is very limited compared to 6 subjects in 2024. Considering a single benchmark will be easy for the school and should only be applied when the score distribution is similar. When the score distribution has a large difference, considering a single benchmark is not appropriate when candidates of this combination cannot compete fairly with the other combination" - this department head added.
Speaking with Tuoi Tre, representatives of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry said that there is currently no plan to consider separate benchmark scores for each combination.

Compare scores to see where you stand
Mr. Tran Dinh Ly - Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry - advised to compare exam scores with the score distribution to know where you stand nationwide.
For example: you got 24 points, are you in the top 30% or 50%? Compare your actual score with last year's benchmark score. If your score is not high, prioritize majors/schools with average scores, avoid choosing all your high-stakes choices and then failing all of them.
Determine your goals clearly: is the major or the school more important? Find a school that suits your ability. Don't forget to consider both safe and backup wishes. Candidates should choose about 5-7 quality wishes in order: 1-2 wishes higher than your actual score (if you can "take a chance"), 2-3 wishes within your ability (equal to your ability), 2-3 safe wishes (a little below your ability but you still like to study). The wish that comes first will be considered first. Order it according to your level of interest, not according to "difficulty".
Calculate the appropriate score spectrum methods
Mr. Le Trung Dao, Vice Principal of the University of Finance and Marketing, said that the school has noticed a large difference in scores between subjects and combinations. The school is calculating admission options to suit the actual test score distribution of candidates.
Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Duc Trung - Principal of Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City - said that the school also knows that the exam scores of candidates this year have decreased and are different. However, the school does not have data on registered candidates so there is no specific information.
"However, the school will also offer many backup admission options to suit reality," said Mr. Trung.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Anh - Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology - said that during the virtual filtering process, if the school finds that there is a large difference in scores between combinations, it will proactively adjust the benchmark score lower for low-scoring combinations.
