According to the Departmentof Education and Training (GD-DT) of Ho Chi Minh City, the score distribution of exam subjects has not fluctuated much compared to previous years.

Unexpected English score distribution

Accordingly, the math exam had scores above average accounting for nearly 55%, with scores concentrated at 5-7; the number of 10s was lower than last year. The foreign language exam had about 32% of exams with excellent scores and was the subject with the highest number of exams with excellent scores among the three exams. The number of exams with a score of 10 accounted for 2.2%, an increase compared to last year. The literature exam had about 90% of exams with above average scores, of which more than 12% of exams had excellent scores.

Most notably, English is the subject with the highest number of perfect scores (on a 10-point scale). Specifically, out of nearly 96,000 English exams, more than 2,100 achieved perfect scores (10 points). This is also the subject with 32% of exams achieving excellent scores (8 points or higher). Meanwhile, the percentage of exams with below-average scores in English is about 32%, also down from 44.8% last year.

In literature, the highest score recorded was 9.25 points, the percentage of candidates with scores below average in this subject was about 12%. In math, as initially predicted, this was the subject with the highest percentage of candidates with scores below average among the three subjects, accounting for nearly 46%.

According to the data published by the HCM City Department of Education and Training, there were 180 failed exams in one of the three subjects: literature, foreign language, and math. According to the regulations of the 10th grade entrance exam, candidates with failed scores will not be allowed to apply to public high schools. The number of zero scores in literature and math decreased compared to last year.

Top school benchmark scores may increase by 0.5-1 points

According to the score distribution announced by the Department of Education and Training, many admissions experts and teachers predict that the benchmark score for grade 10 admission this year in Ho Chi Minh City may increase. Specifically, according to the principal of a high school in Tan Binh district, compared to last year's score distribution, it can be seen that all three subjects have improved. Even with math, although it is the subject with the highest percentage of below-average scores compared to the other two subjects, there is still a small change compared to the last two years. This year, the percentage of below-average scores is 46%, in 2022 it is 45% and in 2020 it is 48%. In literature, although not many exams have good scores, more than 88% of candidates have scores of 5 points or higher. "From the above reasons and according to the enrollment targets of the schools, it can be predicted that the benchmark score for grade 10 this year may increase slightly compared to last year" - said this principal.

Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1), said that this year's exam score range is higher than last year's, especially in English, showing that schools and parents have invested very well in students' foreign language learning. The high score range will lead to an increase in the benchmark scores at both the top and second-tier schools. There are about 11,000 candidates who scored 23 points or more. Therefore, the top schools' benchmark scores will be 23 points or more, an increase of 0.5 - 1 point compared to last year. At the second-tier schools, the benchmark scores may increase by 0.25 - 0.5 points compared to last year. "In particular, according to exam score data, this year there will be no candidates with scores below 10 points being admitted to public grade 10," said Mr. Phu.

July 10: Announcement of 10th grade benchmark scores

According to Mr. Le Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, parents and students can submit applications for re-examination from June 20 to 11:00 a.m. on June 23 at the place where the application documents are submitted. The Departments of Education and Training will compile the re-examination documents to the Examination Department before 5:00 p.m. on June 23. The re-examination marking will begin on June 25. On June 24, the Department will announce the admission scores for specialized and integrated 10th graders and the direct admission results. On July 10, the grade 10 admission scores will be announced.

It is known that in the 2023-2024 school year, 114 public high schools in Ho Chi Minh City will enroll nearly 77,000 students in grade 10 (both regular and specialized) while there are more than 96,000 candidates taking the exam. Thus, nearly 20,000 students will not be able to enter public grade 10.
