Applying advanced technology to treat cardiovascular diseases

A comprehensive heart care centre, SingHealth’s National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS) offers a full range of medical services and care, from preventive care to advanced therapies. The aim is to ensure that patients across Southeast Asia receive comprehensive and integrated cardiac care in one place. In Newsweek’s “World’s Best Heart Hospitals 2025” list, the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS) ranked 12th, retaining its position as the top cardiac hospital in Singapore for the second consecutive year.

Associate Professor Jack Tan, Deputy Executive Director & Senior Consultant Physician, National Heart Centre Singapore, said that cardiovascular care in Singapore has evolved significantly over the past decades, with a focus on prevention, early detection and advanced interventions.

As a medical tourism hub, Singapore has become a preferred destination for patients from neighboring countries.

Specialized heart centers like NHCS provide the full range of heart care from prevention to rehabilitation, as well as comprehensive treatment for end-stage heart failure such as left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation and heart transplantation.

NHCS performs the highest number of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgeries in Singapore, demonstrating its superior expertise in managing complex coronary artery disease cases.

According to 2023 statistics, NHCS has performed more than 700 individual CABG procedures with a 30-day mortality rate of only 0.9%. This shows a high success rate and commitment to patient safety.

In addition, the center also applies a multidisciplinary approach to complex cases, with the participation of specialists from surgeons, interventional cardiologists, radiologists, heart failure physicians and vascular surgeons, supported by multimedia imaging technologies.

“At NHCS, technologies such as 3D echocardiography, CT, nuclear, PET and MRI provide high-resolution and detailed images of the heart, helping cardiologists detect problems at an earlier stage. These technologies are important in accurate treatment planning, especially for complex conditions, helping to reduce complications and improve treatment outcomes,” said Associate Professor Tan.

In parallel, Singapore actively collaborates with international research institutes through strategic partnerships, clinical trials and research networks to ensure patients have access to the latest advances in cardiovascular care.

“For example, NHCS works closely with leading institutions in multi-centre research and clinical trials, ensuring we stay at the forefront of cutting-edge treatments and technologies,” said Associate Professor Tan.

Minimally invasive heart surgery - the technology of the future

According to Associate Professor Tan, minimally invasive surgery helps shorten recovery time and reduces pain and discomfort for patients. Typically, patients can be discharged sooner and return to normal life quickly.

Citing the MitraClip and TriClip™ procedures for treating heart valve disease, Associate Professor Tan said NHCS is one of the pioneers in Asia and Southeast Asia to perform these procedures. These minimally invasive treatments help reduce recovery time, minimize patient discomfort and shorten hospital stays.

By avoiding open heart surgery, patients experience fewer complications and quickly regain their quality of life, allowing them to return to normal activities sooner.

“NHCS has a team of highly skilled and experienced cardiothoracic surgeons and interventional cardiologists. Together with a multidisciplinary healthcare team of nurses and medical professionals, combined with advanced technology and modern equipment, we provide the best possible care for patients,” Associate Professor Tan emphasized.

According to him, NHCS provides minimally invasive surgery for suitable patients who need coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) or heart valve surgery. In particular, the center has pioneered the first minimally invasive double heart valve repair surgery.

This is an endoscopically assisted surgery in which damaged mitral and tricuspid heart valves are repaired in one operation.

Other percutaneous therapies include interventions such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and percutaneous transcatheter edge-to-edge repair, which are alternatives for patients at high risk for traditional cardiac surgery.
