The cut-off scores for all subject groups that include Mathematics have decreased.

Speaking to VietNamNet , Master Cu Xuan Tien, Head of Admissions and Student Affairs at the University of Economics and Law, noted that the distribution of scores in the high school graduation exams showed a clearer differentiation compared to previous years. This facilitates universities and colleges in selecting candidates for admission based on graduation exam scores.

All subjects saw a significant decrease in average scores compared to 2024 (except for Physics, which saw a slight increase, and the number of candidates achieving a perfect score of 10 surged from 55 to 3,929). Surprisingly, Mathematics experienced a sharp decline in average scores, with a left-leaning score distribution, where 56.4% of candidates scored below average, and only about 12% scored 7 points or higher.

Conversely, the English exam was also difficult, but the score distribution was quite surprising, with an average score of 5.38. The percentage of candidates scoring below average (<5) decreased by about 4.5% compared to 2024, and the score distribution graph showed a very nice bell-shaped pattern, indicating clear differentiation. This is because English is an elective subject, leading to a decrease in the number of students registering. At the same time, most students who chose English had already determined that it was a subject they excelled at and had a competitive advantage in the university and college admissions process.

From this reality, Mr. Tien believes that this year's benchmark scores will tend to decrease a lot compared to last year. Majors with admission combinations related to Math, English, and Chemistry will have benchmark scores decrease more than the remaining combinations.

Specifically, the A00 and A01 combinations have seen a sharp decrease in Math scores, so the benchmark scores for engineering and technology majors are likely to decrease by 1 to 2 points.

In the B00 group, with the average scores in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology all decreasing, the cut-off scores for medical, pharmaceutical, and natural science majors will also decrease by 1.5-2.5 points.

For the C00 group, the scores for Literature, History, and Geography remain stable, so the cut-off scores may fluctuate little, decreasing slightly or remaining the same.

In the D01 and D07 subject groups, neither Math nor English scores have increased, so the expected cut-off scores will likely decrease by 1 to 2 points.

The B00 group of subjects is not facing a recruitment crisis, but the cut-off scores have dropped significantly.

According to Mr. Tien, based on this year's score distribution, the number of candidates achieving 7 points or higher in each subject of the B00 combination (Mathematics - Chemistry - Biology) has decreased significantly compared to 2024. This will lead to a substantial reduction in the pool of applicants for this combination – the group of academically strong students. With this reduced pool of applicants, the cut-off scores for majors related to this combination will drop sharply this year. In particular, popular majors like medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry at top universities will see a significant decrease compared to 2024.

However, according to Mr. Tien, the B00 group will not face a recruitment crisis because, firstly, Biology and Chemistry are optional subjects this year (in previous years, if students chose the Natural Sciences exam, they were required to take Physics, Chemistry, and Biology). Students who choose these two subjects are almost certain to have them as their strong subjects and will use them for university admissions. Therefore, the number of candidates registering for these subjects in 2025 will decrease significantly compared to 2024.

Secondly, currently most universities use multiple admission methods for the same major. Therefore, the pool of applicants for these majors will be supplemented by methods such as: direct admission, priority direct admission, admission based on aptitude test results, thinking skills assessment, and conditional admission based on academic transcripts, etc.

Admission scores for the University of Economics and Law have dropped sharply.

This year, the University of Economics and Law will recruit 6 groups including: A00, A01, D07, X25, X26, in which the X25 and X26 groups are new compared to 2024. Because there are 2 main subjects for admission, Math and English, the expected benchmark score this year will decrease by about 0.5-1.5 compared to 2024.

Popular majors such as International Business, E-commerce, International Economics, Marketing, and Economic Law are highly competitive and attract many applicants, so the reduction in admission scores is less likely compared to other majors. Conversely, newer majors/specializations such as Civil Law (in English); Applied Mathematics in Economics, Management and Finance (in English); Financial Technology (Co-operative Education Program); and Management Information Systems (Co-operative Education Program) will offer more opportunities for applicants.

Mr. Tien stated that the school's admissions council is analyzing and considering adjustments to the score difference for different subject combinations to ensure the rights of candidates. Furthermore, this year the school allows candidates with international English certificates to choose between converting them into English scores within their chosen subject combination or adding bonus points to their overall score. Candidates only need to submit proof of their English certificate through the Ministry's admissions registration portal, and the school's admissions software will automatically calculate the optimal option for them.

Mr. Tien advised that while the average scores for subjects/combinations this year tend to decrease, candidates should not worry too much. Because with the new admission regulations, early admission has been abolished this year, all methods must be considered simultaneously (without separate quotas), and equivalent admission scores are used. Therefore, the chances of being admitted through the high school graduation exam score method will be higher than in 2024.
