This morning (September 11), US Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are expected to have an important debate for the presidential election in November.
Reuters reported that Philadelphia police were preparing for what is expected to be a "fierce" confrontation between the two presidential candidates. Barricades were set up around the National Constitution Center, the venue for the debate, which will be moderated by ABC News, and authorities were also planning for protests during the event.
Harris's Opportunity
This is the first face-to-face meeting between Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump and may also be the only debate between the two before the election on November 5, according to Reuters. Many bars and universities in Philadelphia have held parties to watch the debate, which could give the winner an advantage in the final round.

More disadvantages for Mr. Trump The Michigan Supreme Court on September 9 rejected Robert Kennedy Jr.'s request to remove his name from the state's presidential ballot on November 5, according to CNN. Mr. Kennedy ran as a third-place candidate and withdrew from the race in August to support Mr. Trump. He had requested to be removed from the ballot in Michigan and Arizona because he was concerned that his supporters would continue to vote for him instead of Mr. Trump. However, the Michigan Supreme Court said that removing Mr. Kennedy's name was impossible because the party that nominated him, the Natural Law Party, opposed the withdrawal. For Ms. Harris, this is an opportunity for her to introduce herself to voters nationwide and present her policy priorities. Harris entered the race in late July after President Joe Biden withdrew under pressure from within the Democratic Party following a poor debate performance against Trump in late June. Since then, she has set fundraising records, reviving the Democratic campaign. In an election season where voters have shown fatigue with the Biden-Trump rematch, Harris’s presence is seen as a breath of fresh air that could give her an advantage. With her experience as a prosecutor, Harris could seek to charge Trump for his actions after his election defeat four years ago, which led to his indictment. The unprecedented criminal charges against the former president would be a weakness that Harris could exploit. The vice president's aides said she would focus on her opponent's anti-abortion stance, failures in building a border wall, fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, and economic policies that favor the rich.
Trump's experience
On the other hand, the debate is an opportunity for Mr. Trump to assert his advantage in terms of experience leading a country and handling international issues. The former president has said he could end conflicts in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip , and protect the United States from adversaries like North Korea and Iran. So far, Ms. Harris’s vision for the upcoming presidency has been assessed as unclear while progressives are also waiting to see if she can distinguish herself from Mr. Biden on important issues like the Gaza conflict, and whether she is willing to increase pressure on the Israeli government to reach a ceasefire agreement. In an effort to win over undecided voters, Harris reversed some of the positions she had taken during her short-lived 2020 campaign. According to Newsweek magazine, Harris supported banning fracking in fossil fuel extraction, decriminalizing illegal border crossings, and expanding health care for undocumented immigrants. However, she reversed her stance on a fracking ban while saying there should be a crackdown on illegal border crossers, a topic that Trump has been heavily critical of in recent times. On the other hand, observers say that Trump could be doing himself a disservice if he continues to engage in personal attacks and false statements instead of focusing on policy during the debate.
