Minimum score for health and education majors: Does not affect top schools

Experts say that this year's minimum scores for health and education majors are consistent with the actual graduation exam and do not greatly affect top schools.

On July 22, the Ministry of Education and Training officially announced the threshold to ensure input quality in 2025 (floor score) for the health and teacher training groups, in which the floor score for the health group decreased by 2 points compared to last year.

Experts say the floor score is suitable for the actual graduation exam and does not affect top schools much.

Health sector declines sharply

For the group of health majors with practice certificates, the minimum score for medicine and dentistry is 20.5 points, down 2 points compared to last year; pharmacy and traditional medicine is 21 points, down 2 points compared to last year; health majors including nursing, preventive medicine, midwifery, medical testing techniques, medical imaging techniques, rehabilitation techniques, and dental prosthetic techniques are 19 points, down 2 points compared to last year.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Khoi, head of the university training department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the fact that the minimum score for the health sector in 2025 is reduced by 2 points compared to 2024 is consistent with the practical results of this year's high school graduation exam, in which the average score of the B00 combination (math - chemistry - biology) has decreased sharply.

However, the current reduction in the floor score will not affect the top schools much because the standard scores at these schools, especially in the fields of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, etc., may decrease but are unlikely to fluctuate much.

"If the floor is kept as high as last year, many medical and pharmaceutical training schools, especially middle and lower-ranking schools, will have difficulty recruiting enough students," said Mr. Khoi.

Mr. Khoi also noted that candidates need to note that the floor score is only the threshold score to qualify for admission, not the admission standard score, so they need to think carefully to set appropriate wishes to have more chances of being admitted.

Pedagogy does not change

In 2025, the admission threshold for university-level teacher training programs will be 19 points. For physical education, music education, and fine arts education, the admission threshold will be 18 points for a combination of 3 cultural subjects. Other admission combinations will be implemented according to the regulations of the 2024 admission regulations.

The admission threshold for college-level preschool education is 16.5 points for a combination of three cultural subjects - a decrease of 0.5 points compared to last year.

Associate Professor Dr. Do Van Dung, former principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, said that keeping the floor score for university-level pedagogy in 2025 the same as last year and reducing the floor score for college-level preschool education by 0.5 (to 16.5 points) is reasonable.

"With this floor score, if schools are flexible in enrollment and combine with other selection methods to attract candidates, at the same time not reducing the quality of training. Maintaining a stable floor score will help ensure the selection of students with sufficient academic qualifications and qualities, and will help ensure the quality of enrollment in the context that teacher training schools still maintain the need to train high-quality teachers," said Mr. Dung.

According to Mr. Dung, reducing the minimum score for college preschool education can help solve the shortage of teachers at this level in some rural or remote areas - where the demand for human resources is increasing due to the expansion of the school system.

At the same time, schools need to promote the application of additional criteria such as interviews, assessment of pedagogical capacity or review of academic records to select suitable candidates, ensuring not only knowledge but also soft skills and passion for the profession.

This stability also encourages teacher training colleges to invest more in training programs, improve the quality of lecturers and facilities, thereby raising the status of the education sector in society.

Two things to do

During the admission process on the general admission system of the Ministry of Education and Training, there are two things candidates must do, otherwise they will not be considered for admission or will be removed from the admission list: register their admission wishes and pay the fees for the registered wishes.

Accordingly, candidates will register and adjust their university wishes an unlimited number of times until 5:00 p.m. on July 28.

After registering their wishes, candidates pay the admission fee online from July 29 to 5pm on August 5. Universities will announce the admission scores before 5pm on August 22.
