Exam scores are not as expected, what do experts advise candidates?

GD&TĐ - Immediately after the 2025 high school graduation exam scores were officially announced, many candidates fell into a state of anxiety because their scores were not as expected.

According to admissions experts, test scores that do not meet expectations are not the end of the world. The important issue is each student's realistic attitude and proactive adaptation in the context of increasingly flexible university admissions.

Staying Calm Amid Exam Score Shock

Sharing about the confusion of many students after knowing their exam scores, Dr. Mai Duc Toan - Director of the Admissions and Communications Center, Gia Dinh University, said that this is a very natural reaction, especially this year, the first time the exam was organized according to the 2018 General Education Program, with exam questions having clear differentiation, especially in Math and English.

This expert also emphasized that high school graduation exam scores are just one factor among many current admission methods.

Instead of letting emotions control them, students should calmly re-evaluate their abilities and carefully study the admission methods that universities are applying to expand their chances of admission, instead of focusing on just one door.

Dr. Toan believes that placing expectations on a major or a school is admirable, but it can also easily leave candidates disappointed if they fail.

In that case, you need to stay alert to find other options that suit your abilities and interests. This is not the end, but a turning point.

Mr. Toan advised candidates to compare their high school graduation exam scores with the benchmark scores of the last 3 years of the registered major/school, thereby determining the level of feasibility.

At the same time, candidates can look for majors that are close to their interests but have lower score requirements, as long as they still maintain their original career orientation.

"Candidates should also consider additional admission methods or apply to universities that use high school transcripts and competency assessment exam scores. During the selection process, candidates should not hesitate to consult teachers, admissions experts or alumni for more practical perspectives," he added.

In addition, according to Dr. Toan, one of the important "lifebuoys" to help candidates optimize their chances of admission is to take advantage of alternative admission methods.

To make the most of these opportunities, it is important that students carefully read the admission regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training (especially the 2025 regulations with many notable new points) and the admission plans of each school to clearly understand the major codes, school codes, admission combinations, admission methods as well as additional conditions (if any).

Flexible other path

From the perspective of many years of admissions consulting, MSc. Pham Thai Son - Director of the Admissions and Communications Center, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade also acknowledged that many students fall into "exam score shock" because they have set too high expectations on a single result.

"When the score is lower than the previous year's benchmark, plus pressure from friends, family, and society, students can easily lose their direction," said Master Son.

Instead of panicking, MSc. Son advises candidates to take time to evaluate the reasons why they did not meet expectations: due to academic ability, exam psychology or the level of competition in the industry.

Then, re-plan a more suitable path, choose a major close to your passion, study at college and then transfer to university, or even stop for a year to review and accumulate experience.

“Gap year - a year off to prepare again is a popular trend in many developed countries. Students can absolutely choose that path if they feel they are not ready. This is not a failure, but a valuable time for candidates to discover themselves, learn skills and prepare better for next year," Mr. Pham Thai Son suggested.

A practical strategy proposed by Master Son is to stratify aspirations into 3 groups: a group of schools within one's ability (safe competition ratio), a group of schools that one can pass if lucky, and a group of dream schools.

In addition, with highly interconnected majors, candidates can choose majors in the same faculty to later transfer or take additional credits in their favorite major.

For example, if you do not have enough points for Food Technology, you can choose Food Safety and Quality Assurance. These majors are all taught by the same faculty, and students can take additional credits to improve their skills later.

Not stopping at domestic universityeducation , Mr. Son also broadened his perspective on other directions such as vocational training, studying abroad, starting a business early or accumulating practical skills.

"You shouldn't compare yourself to others because each person has their own path. Success doesn't depend on passing the university entrance exam the first time. Maybe next year, you can go to college and then transfer to university.

If you do not get into the major you want, you can take more university credits in your favorite major. University is just a stage, not everything. You can learn a trade, start your own business or gain experience early. As long as you have the will to strive to learn for life," emphasized Master Son.

Even if the test scores are not as expected, candidates should not consider it a failure. On the contrary, this can be a turning point for them to learn how to adapt, adjust and mature.

In an era where higher education is increasingly open with a variety of diverse and flexible admission methods, opportunities always exist for those who know how to seize them.

After completing the registration of wishes, candidates need to pay the admission fee according to the number of wishes using the high school graduation exam results. Universities and colleges will announce the admission results before 5:00 p.m. on August 22. Candidates can look up the results at the Ministry of Education and Training's Admissions Portal or the Admissions Information Portal of universities.
