Dien Bien: Salvaging a car that fell into a stream due to a broken suspension bridge cable

On the morning of July 22, the Pa Xa Lao suspension bridge (Thanh Yen commune, Dien Bien district, Dien Bien province) suddenly had its cable broken, causing a pickup truck and a motorbike to fall into the stream. The incident left four people injured, two of whom were seriously injured and are being treated at Dien Bien Provincial General Hospital.

Authorities were quickly present to rescue the four victims.

According to Mr. Phan Van Vuong, Deputy Chief of Office of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Dien Bien province, the initial cause was determined to be a broken main cable on the right side of the bridge, causing the bridge to tilt and collapse.

The suspension bridge tilted to one side, throwing a pickup truck carrying 3 commune officials on storm prevention and 1 local resident riding a motorbike into the water.

Immediately after the incident, the local force of 17 police officers, soldiers and militia organized a rescue, bringing the victims to shore safely. The motorbike was salvaged, while the pickup truck was still lying in the stream. The total damage was estimated at about 1.2 billion VND.

Dien Bien Province Fire Prevention and Rescue Police mobilized 30 more officers and soldiers to the scene to assist in recovering the vehicle. In particular, the Director of Dien Bien Province General Hospital directly directed the treatment of two seriously injured victims.

Authorities were mobilized to rescue the victims and salvage the pickup truck.

Thanh Yen Commune People's Committee has set up barriers, posted warning signs and organized traffic diversion across the temporary iron bridge downstream, about 800m from the damaged bridge. The Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention has requested inspection of all weak bridge structures in the area, strictly prohibiting heavy trucks from crossing the temporary bridge during storms.

The authorities also proposed that the Provincial People's Committee soon allocate funds to repair Pa Xa Lao bridge to ensure traffic safety for people in the highland villages of Thanh Yen commune.
