- The reason you returned to acting is because your children are older or because you miss the screen so much?

The reason includes both of what you said. I gave birth to my second child 3 years ago and the baby is now strong, so since the beginning of the year I have started to return to the Hanoi Drama Theater stage and perform quite a lot. My return to the stage is supported by Mr. Viet.

The way of making films now is different from when I made films 20 years ago and this is also the time for me to try to get used to the way of making films now. When the script for Gentle Sunshine was released, Mr. Viet said he had a good role for me. Reading the script, I was a bit shocked because the role of Tuyet was completely different from my character. However, because I had played a villain in the movie Blog Nang Dau many years ago, this type of role was not difficult so I agreed.

- Maybe Thanh Hoa's husband "conspired" to give his wife a villainous role so that she would be hated but still leave a strong impression? Do you think that if she played a gentle role, she would not leave a strong impression on the audience like Tuyet?

I think Viet also considered this. He also told me that if I kept playing gentle roles, it would be boring and not stand out. So Viet wanted to give me a role that was different from his own and said "don't worry, you can do it". When I went to the film crew, everyone was surprised that I was not suitable because the character in the script was sharp and looked "difficult". Some people said that if I accepted this role, I would have to struggle because it was not related to me in real life.

- How was your first day on set after many years of being a stay-at-home mom and taking care of your family?

I was really not used to it on the first day because the film was filmed with 3 cameras at the same time and the sound was recorded live, everything was very different from when I acted in films many years ago. Anh Viet reminded me how to act and People's Artist Lan Huong Bong reminded me how to talk. From the following days, I got used to the new routine of work.

Director's husband scolds his wife mercilessly on set

- What does your husband think about your acting? Does he "scold" you on set if your performance is not satisfactory?

Yes, especially on the first day of filming. At home, he always gives in to his wife and I tend to bully him more (laughs). But because I have worked with him on several films, I understand his personality and know that he is fair and strict at work. Even though I was mentally prepared, I was still a bit shocked when I got to the set because he is very serious on set.

In the morning, when he came to the studio, he took me out to eat, bought drinks for his wife, and pampered me like usual, but when it came to filming, he was a different person. He reminded me every little thing from how to speak, how to stand in front of the big camera on set. At that time, I also felt sad and shy in front of everyone because on the first day of work, I was a bit lacking in confidence and not used to the job after many years away from the camera.

- Do you feel pressured when acting in a film with the director's husband because you will be "scrutinized" more?

Actually, this is the fourth film I have worked with Viet and I have felt that pressure. Since we started dating, I have felt shy about acting in a film directed by him and thought it was not a good idea. But Viet said there was nothing to be shy about because if the role was right, I would do it and I also had to audition like everyone else. I simply thought that if I accepted a role, I had to do my job well because I would not only act in films directed by my husband but also films directed by other directors.

- Since getting married, you have hardly participated in any movies. Were you sad at that time because you missed your job, especially when you stayed home to take care of the family while your husband was still exposed to movies every day?

It's true that there was a time when I felt unsteady because before getting married, I was constantly active in theater, acting in movies, even before that I acted in music videos, modeled, and competed in Miss Vietnam 2006 with Mai Phuong Thuy.

When I got married, I wanted to spend more time taking care of my family and wanted my child to be 5 years old before going back to work. After a while, I took a break to have my second child and now I am really back to work because my child is strong enough.

During my time at home, I saw my classmate Thanh Huong being active and famous with many career opportunities, so I felt a bit regretful. I used to think that if I had not chosen family, my position would be different now.

However, that thought passed very quickly because I was too busy taking care of the children and the house. It was really my choice, although some people did not understand and thought that my husband forbade me from acting and forced me to stay at home, while in fact, Mr. Viet always encouraged me to return to acting.

Audience went to his personal page and scolded him, "Just looking at his face, you can see he's crazy"

- Many years ago, you made films when social media was not as developed as it is now, and the audience did not react as violently as they do now. Did you read the comments from viewers when Tuyet's role was heavily criticized?

The film is still being filmed and I have been in hiding for so long that my mind is a bit fragile. Meanwhile, many viewers are too absorbed in it and curse the character and then the actors. At first, I read the comments but now I don't dare anymore. Anh Viet reassured me that it's okay, because from the beginning, he confirmed that the role is not a good person, so it's normal for the audience to have different opinions.

However, I was still shocked because I was not used to having the audience come to my personal page and send messages scolding me, "Just looking at my face makes me feel like a fool"...

- So what do your family members, specifically your eldest child, think about your role?

The older child is 13 years old and even though I told her in advance that I played the villain in the movie, she still didn't like it when she watched it. When we watched the movie together, every time I appeared, her face would frown in annoyance. After the movie, she commented that the character Tuyet's face and voice in the movie were nothing like me in real life. She said that even when her mother was angry and yelled at her, she never saw her like she did in the movie.
