"The Last Wish" - laugh to remember!

The comedy film "The Last Wish" cleverly and humorously addresses the deep emotions of adolescence, bringing laughter to the audience. Behind this are moments of quiet reflection on a friendship that, though boisterous and playful, is beautiful and sincere; and on the love of parents for their children, expressed differently but sharing a common, boundless affection.

The film is currently showing in theaters nationwide.

The film revolves around three characters: Hoang (Avin Lu), Long (Ly Hao Manh Quynh), and Thy (Hoang Ha) – a group of close friends since childhood. Unexpectedly, Hoang becomes bedridden due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and only has a few months to live. On his 18th birthday, Hoang confides in his two best friends about his last wish: to become a man and experience "forbidden fruit" before he dies. Wanting to help Hoang have no regrets, Thy and Long do everything they can to fulfill his wish. However, they encounter a series of ironic, troublesome, and hilarious situations…

As a remake of the South Korean film "The Last Ride" (2016), the film has a solid and engaging script. However, adapting popular foreign films into Vietnamese is never a simple task. Fortunately, "The Last Wish" has done well in this area, delivering a heartwarming and meaningful comedy.

Compared to the original, the film changes the group of friends from three men to two men and one woman to explore more facets and increase psychological depth. The comedic situations are also adapted to suit the context and culture of Vietnam. Most importantly, the film retains the spirit of the original work regarding friendship and family bonds in a sincere and touching way.

The audience burst into laughter at Long and Thy's antics and schemes as they tried to find someone to help Hoang fulfill his dying wish, but all their attempts failed. They failed because they were too naive; their simple, direct approach to persuading others led to disastrous consequences. Not to mention, they also had to deal with and hide the truth from Hoang's parents and their own parents, making the situation even more awkward and complicated…

The generation gap within Vietnamese families is also a cleverly integrated and handled issue in this film. Besides hiding his wish from his parents and secretly fulfilling it, the film also portrays the differences in thinking between parents and children, and the parenting and love styles of each family. Thy's family lacks a father, Long's family lacks a mother, and Hoang has both parents, but all three families lack common ground, understanding, and empathy between the two generations.

Circumstances shape the personalities and desires of children. Thy is a strong-willed girl, outwardly tough and resilient to reassure her mother, but deep down she harbors insecurities and unspoken feelings. Long is enthusiastic and cheerful, but always longs for his father's closeness and recognition. Hoang is loved and cared for by his parents, but he doesn't dare to confide in them openly, only trying to please them…

The film places three young people on the brink of loss and everyday struggles as they search for answers: what does it mean to live a meaningful life? What is true family love? Other issues such as school bullying, teenage romance, and homosexuality are also addressed lightly and transformed into humorous and lighthearted situations. The issues are connected and told seamlessly, providing viewers with a multifaceted emotional experience: moments of unrestrained laughter, touching moments, and profound empathy…

The film has a gentle, meaningful ending, leaving both those who stay and those who leave with peace and no regrets. All the characters, whether main or supporting, realize what they need to strive for and what they need to let go of in order to live better or leave without burdens. The performances of the three main actors are complete, bringing vibrant and memorable moments to the viewers.
