Since the beginning of April 2023, Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) has been applying a new form of punishment for students who violate school regulations.

Accordingly, instead of the previous forms of punishment such as writing self-criticism reports, copying lines, and community service, students who violate the rules will be required to go to the library, choose a book from the "Seeds of the Soul" bookshelf to read, and write a review of the book's content.

Vo Duy Thinh, a student in class 10A7 at Bui Thi Xuan High School, believes that reading helps him better understand the meaning of life values, thereby determining appropriate attitudes and behaviors.

Similarly, a student from class 11A14 stated that the school's change in student discipline from community service to requiring students to read books has made punishments gentler but more effective in the long term. "The gentle moral stories help us realize the mistakes we've made, thereby suggesting ways to correct them and live better lives," the male student expressed.

According to Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School, the innovative approach to student discipline aims to more deeply impact students' awareness without creating a heavy or stressful psychological burden. Instead, students are encouraged to cultivate a reading habit and absorb moral lessons in a gentle and pleasant manner. After reading, students are asked to write reflections, expressing their thoughts on inappropriate behaviors in society. Through this process, teachers and parents gain a better understanding of the students' thoughts, feelings, and emotions, enabling them to provide appropriate guidance and support.

In particular, stories related to how family members interact will positively impact students' thoughts and behavior. “When students learn to love their parents and grandparents, they will learn to love and care for those around them, sowing seeds of good character in their hearts. This is an opportunity for students to learn life lessons, correct their mistakes, and at the same time, learn and train to become cultured and civilized individuals,” shared the Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School.

Besides "Seeds of the Soul," books about exemplary filial children, studying and working according to the thoughts, ethics, and style of Ho Chi Minh ... should also be added to the library for students to read and write their reflections, helping them become useful and responsible members of their families and society.
