Arriving at the DNA sample collection point of unidentified martyrs' relatives at the Dinh Hoa Commune People's Committee at 2:00 p.m. on July 9, the sun was blazing hot, but the police officers in sweaty shirts still diligently rode motorbikes to the homes of the martyrs' relatives to pick them up and take them to collect samples. Many elderly people were in poor health and had difficulty walking, so the commune police officers enthusiastically carried them to the DNA sample collection point.
Mr. Do Ngoc Ngoan, 90 years old, in Cam Chuong village, Dinh Cong commune, Yen Dinh district (old), now Dinh Hoa commune, shared: Since the day I heard the police of Dinh Hoa commune come to my house to report that I would go to the commune People's Committee headquarters to take DNA samples to help find the remains of my youngest brother, martyr Nguyen Ngoc Ngan, who died in 1966 on the battlefield in the South, I have been very nervous and anxious. Nearly 60 years since my youngest brother died, especially after the country was at peace and unified, my family has searched many times but all in vain. Today is a hot sunny day, but the police came to my house to take DNA samples, I have a thousand rays of hope to find my brother and return to my homeland...
With a core and pioneering role in the collection of DNA samples from martyrs' relatives, in recent times, the Thanh Hoa Provincial Police force has coordinated with GeneStory Joint Stock Company to establish working groups, directly going to each residential area to collect DNA samples for the maternal relatives of martyrs... To ensure the roadmap for collecting records for martyrs' relatives, the Provincial Police has coordinated with the Department of Home Affairs to check management records, determine the health status of the subjects who need to collect DNA samples, and at the same time organize propaganda and mobilize martyrs' families to agree to participate in sample collection.
Due to the large number of DNA samples collected from martyrs' relatives in the province (in phase 2 alone, Thanh Hoa Provincial Police set a target of collecting 35,626 DNA samples from martyrs' relatives), the residence of martyrs' relatives is scattered in many far-flung localities, so along with the deployment of working groups to coordinate centralized collection at the headquarters of the People's Committees of communes and wards, the Provincial Police organized mobile collection, directly going to the homes of martyrs' relatives who are elderly, in poor health, and have difficulty traveling (including Saturdays and Sundays, regardless of day or night) to carry out sample collection steps.
Collecting biological samples for DNA comparison is a quiet but meaningful job. DNA identification officers have to travel all over the countryside, visiting each family of the martyrs to collect blood and hair samples - biological pieces to trace the blood relationship. There are old mothers who grit their teeth to collect blood in a fragile hope; there are younger siblings and grandchildren who, although they have never met the martyrs, are still willing to contribute to finding their loved ones in the ground.
Lieutenant Colonel Le Thi Tuyet, Deputy Captain of the Administrative Police Department for Social Order, Provincial Police, said: Although there are many difficulties and obstacles, with the spirit of "not leaving any sample behind, not mistaking any relative, acting urgently but absolutely accurately, respecting relatives and the honor of martyrs", as of July 10, the DNA sample collection stations have collected 12,858 samples, the remaining 22,768 samples we will try to collect with the spirit of "working during the day is not enough, working at night" to complete before July 27 to pay tribute to the heroic martyrs and also to share the losses, aspirations and expectations of the martyrs' families.
Major Hoang Anh Tuan, Chief of Dinh Hoa Commune Police, said: Implementing the Plan of the Provincial Police Director on collecting DNA samples of martyrs' relatives, the Commune Police have advised local Party committees and authorities to review, make lists, collect complete and accurate information of martyrs' relatives to serve the construction of information data, and update DNA information into the National Population Database.
In addition to going directly to each house to inform, propagate, and mobilize the martyrs' relatives to participate in collecting DNA for the right subjects, the Commune Police force also directly supports and brings the elderly, the weak, the lonely, and the disabled to the centralized collection points to collect samples. Currently, all 324 DNA samples of martyrs' relatives in Dinh Hoa commune have been collected and successfully authenticated. We believe that this is a necessary thing to do, it is the responsibility and duty of those who are enjoying a peaceful and free life towards those who have not hesitated to sacrifice their blood and lives for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland.
Accompanying the Department of Administrative Management of Social Order and GeneStory Joint Stock Company were hundreds of cadres, youth union members, Women's Union members and police officers from communes and wards across the province. Overcoming the difficulties and hardships of the weather and long distances, they visited each family of martyrs in remote rural areas; listened to each story, recorded each memory blurred by time to get more clues. A blood sample, a few strands of hair... those seemingly simple things have great meaning. They are the key to open the door of time, connecting the present with the past, connecting the living with the deceased.
The war has long since ended, many martyrs’ remains still lie in cemeteries and old battlefields, their identities still unknown due to lack of information and lost records. In the hot weather, the sweat soaked the uniforms of the police forces at the DNA sample collection points of unidentified martyrs’ relatives, clearly showing the deep gratitude of today’s generation towards those who sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland.
