High-level diplomacy
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra paid an official visit to Vietnam and co-chaired the 4th meeting of the Vietnam-Thailand Joint Cabinet from May 15-16 at the invitation of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. General Secretary To Lam and President Luong Cuong received Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired the official welcoming ceremony ; held talks; co-chaired the 4th meeting of the Vietnam-Thailand Joint Cabinet ; witnessed the signing ceremony and exchange of 8 cooperation documents in the fields of economy , security and education between the two countries; and held a reception with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. The two Prime Ministers also co-chaired the Vietnam-Thailand Business Forum. National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
Receiving Ms. Mariam J. Sherman, Country Director of the World Bank (WB) Office for Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia on May 15, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked the WB to reform procedures and conditions for loans; provide policy advice and support Vietnam in implementing strategic goals, implementing the "strategic quartet", especially infrastructure development with large-scale infrastructure projects.
On May 13, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a meeting of the Government Standing Committee to draft a Government Resolution on the action plan for building and developing the Diplomatic sector until 2030 and vision to 2045. At the meeting, delegates listened to a report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and discussed the content of the draft action plan for building and developing the Diplomatic sector, with main contents on the organization, human resources, facilities and Vietnamese diplomatic identity.
Working with representatives of the US business community investing and doing business in Vietnam to listen to, resolve difficulties, and propose solutions to promote Vietnam-US investment and business cooperation on May 13, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that the Vietnamese Government is ready to dialogue with partners and businesses, including US partners and businesses, in a frank and constructive spirit, bringing results that are beneficial to both sides.
Activities of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs
On May 19, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son received and presented the Medal “For the Cause of Vietnamese Diplomacy” to Mr. Lazare Eloundou Assomo, Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Center . On the same day, Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO Nguyen Minh Vu received and worked with Mr. Lazare.
On the occasion of the 135th anniversary of the birth of the great President Ho Chi Minh (May 19, 1890 - May 19, 2025), on May 19, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son led a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to visit President Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and offer incense at the Monument to Heroes and Martyrs on Bac Son Street, Hanoi.
On May 14, the Meeting with Korea 2025 Conference took place in Hung Yen with the participation of more than 500 delegates. The conference was jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Vietnam, and the People's Committee of Hung Yen province. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son attended and delivered a speech at the Conference.
Bilateral diplomacy
Receiving Mr. Lee Dong-gy, Director General of ASEAN and Southeast Asia Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea , on the occasion of his visit to Vietnam to attend the Mekong-Korea Cooperation Senior Officials Meeting (MKC) on May 14, Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu suggested that the two countries' foreign ministries continue to cooperate effectively to implement the contents agreed upon during the visit to Vietnam by Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae Yul in April 2025.
On May 14, Member of the Party Central Committee, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Ministry, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Manh Cuong presented the decision to appoint Deputy Head of the staff agency assisting the Party Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs . Attending the ceremony were representatives of leaders of functional units under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and departments of the Party Committee of the Ministry.
Receiving Philippine Ambassador to Vietnam Meynardo Los Banos Montealegre on May 13, Party Central Committee member and Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cuong believed that the Philippine Ambassador will continue to make active contributions to promoting the strategic partnership to develop more strongly, comprehensively and substantially, for the benefit of the people of the two countries, for peace, stability and development in the region and the world.
Speaking at the ceremony to celebrate the 210th anniversary of the National Day of the Kingdom of Norway (May 17, 1814 - May 17, 2024) on May 16, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang emphasized that Vietnam and Norway share a number of development priorities in the fields of renewable energy, marine economy, science - technology, innovation, green economic development, circularity, and reducing emissions to "0" by 2050.
On May 13, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang received Ms. Sabine Fandrych, Secretary General of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Foundation (FES) Germany , during her visit to Vietnam, on the occasion of FES celebrating the 35th anniversary of the establishment of its Representative Office in Vietnam. On May 13, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War and the 30th anniversary of the normalization of Vietnam-US relations, the Stimson Center - an independent research organization on international security and common prosperity, headquartered in Washington - held a seminar with speakers who have devoted much effort to the post-war healing process as well as promoting cooperation between the two countries. Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung attended as the keynote speaker.
On May 18, in Nanning City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Vietnamese Ambassador to China Pham Thanh Binh attended the opening ceremony of the "Following Uncle Ho's Footsteps" Research and Study Camp . The event was jointly organized by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, the Guangxi Youth League Region and the Guangdong Provincial Youth Union (China), and was the opening activity for the program "Red Journey of Research and Study for Youth" in 2025. Previously, Ambassador Pham Thanh Binh met with member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Secretary of the Party Committee of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Tran Cuong (May 16).
On the occasion of Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's official visit to Vietnam (May 15-16), Vietnamese Ambassador to Thailand Pham Viet Hung shared with TG&VN about the significance and focus of the visit, and his expectations for a new height in bilateral relations. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (May 19, 1975 - May 19, 2025), Vietnamese Ambassador to Mexico Nguyen Van Hai shared the highlights of bilateral relations over the past half century, and pointed out directions for key areas that the two countries need to strengthen to create breakthroughs in the new period. Mexican Ambassador to Vietnam Alejandro Negrin assessed that this is a milestone marking the official beginning of the relationship between the two countries, which have many similarities in firmly protecting a core principle: preserving and protecting national sovereignty in all circumstances.
Multilateral diplomacy
Attending the 34th session of the Committee on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ34) on May 19, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang informed the Conference about the Vietnamese Government's efforts in perfecting the legal framework on criminal justice, enhancing international cooperation in crime prevention, including the initiative of Vietnam hosting the signing ceremony of the Hanoi Convention, which is a testament to Vietnam's commitment to being an active member of the international community.
On May 15, candidate for the position of President of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Ms. Annalena Baerbock, former Foreign Minister of Germany, had dialogue sessions with the Asia-Pacific Group and all members of the UNGA to share her vision and priorities if elected. Speaking at the dialogue session and in a private exchange, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Vietnamese Mission to the UN , asked Ms. Annalena Baerbock to promote issues of interest to Vietnam .
At the International Vesak Day Celebration on May 14 in New York (USA) , Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang announced that Vietnam had successfully organized the United Nations Vesak Festival 2025 with the theme "Solidarity and Tolerance for Human Dignity: Buddhist Wisdom for Peace and Sustainable Development", bringing together monks, nuns and Buddhist representatives from many countries. This year's event is even more meaningful as it takes place on the occasion of Vietnam's 50th anniversary of national reunification and preparation for the 80th anniversary of National Day.
Citizen protection
Mr. Luong Thanh Quang, Deputy Director of the Consular Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, shared about the process of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinating with relevant agencies at home and abroad to bring back more than 600 Vietnamese citizens residing illegally in Myanmar . Currently, 471 people have returned to Vietnam safely and orderly.

At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on May 15, Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang informed about the case of a Vietnamese citizen violating immigration regulations and being detained in Myanmar ; Vietnam handed over a diplomatic note protesting China over the fishing ban in the East Sea ; and updated the situation of Vietnam-US trade negotiations .
Other activities
On May 19, according to Directive 05-CT/TW, the Party Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a field trip and study trip to the historical site K9 - Da Chong and Uncle Ho Temple on the occasion of the 135th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's birthday. The delegation visited and learned about the historical sites in the K9 - Da Chong area and organized political activities with the theme of studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style, associated with the content of the article "Lifelong learning" by General Secretary To Lam and the movement "Popular education number".
