In the conversation with the members and youth, we learned that just 2-3 years ago, in Mo Si San village (Si Lo Lau commune), there were still many bad customs. Typically, the daughter-in-law was absolutely not allowed to sit on a chair in the presence of her father-in-law or brother-in-law, but had to squat, even during family meals. However, in the past 3 years, thanks to the persistent efforts of the government and mass organizations, people's awareness, especially the younger generation, has been gradually changed, and that bad custom has been gradually eliminated.
Youth Union members of Si Lo Lau commune regularly propagate and mobilize people to change their thinking and eliminate backward customs.
For example, in the past, the family of Mr. Phung Chin Leng (born in 1961) and Mrs. Tan Lo May (born in 1958) had to endure this custom for many years. Mrs. May said that in the past, she and her sisters-in-law in the family always had to sit lower, not on the same level as her father-in-law and her husband's brothers and uncles. However, when commune cadres and youth union members regularly came to their house to propagate, mobilize and explain, they boldly abandoned that backward custom to move towards a more equal lifestyle. Now, in every meal of Mr. Phung Chin Leng and Mrs. Tan Lo May's family, their daughters-in-law and daughters-in-law are allowed to sit on chairs, gather around the dinner table, eat and chat happily.
Mr. Leng shared: “In the past, we thought that was an impossible reason to give up. But after listening to the explanation from the staff, I found it right, giving up would make our children and grandchildren closer and happier. I am old, now seeing the whole family sitting together, talking and eating together, I feel very happy.”
Sharing with us, Mr. Cheo Dieu Huyen - Head of Mo Si San village (Si Lo Lau commune) said: The village has 177 households, more than 800 people, 100% of whom are Dao ethnic group. It was once mentioned that the village still has many backward customs, affecting the daily life and equality in the family such as: early marriage, incestuous marriage, cumbersome and expensive weddings, women are not allowed to participate in some common rituals of the family, village... But now, those customs are gradually fading into the past, replaced by a new, more equal and progressive lifestyle.
People of Mo Si San village (Si Lo Lau commune) have abolished the custom of daughters-in-law not being allowed to sit on the same level as their father-in-law.
Along with eliminating backward customs, to contribute to improving the quality of life of the people, recently, Economic-Defense Group 356 has also paid special attention to investing in essential works. One of the recent highlights is the investment in building a domestic water supply project in Seo Ho Thau village - where there are 174 households, 100% of whom are Dao ethnic group.
The road to Mo Si San village (Si Lo Lau commune) has been invested in concrete, convenient for travel.
Previously, to have water for use, many households had to pull water pipes from streams to their homes, but due to the rugged mountainous terrain, small pipes, and low water pressure, the amount of water flowing back was not enough for use. At the points where water flows into the village, people also dug holes to store water, but this was not hygienic, making daily life extremely difficult, especially during hot, dry times.
Faced with the serious shortage of domestic water, implementing construction items of the Economic-Defense Zone construction investment project phase 3 (2021 - 2025), Economic-Defense Group 356 urgently invested in the construction of a domestic water supply project in Seo Ho Thau village. The project has a total investment of over 2 billion VND, with many items including: 1 water supply dam; 1 20m3 filter tank; 1 central water tank of 50m3; a water pipeline from the dam to the village with a total length of more than 2km and 11 tanks in the village with each tank of 10m3 to bring water to each household. Deployed from July 2024, after more than 5 months of construction, by the end of November 2024, the project was completed and officially handed over for use.
Mr. Tan Lao Lu - Head of Seo Ho Thau village (Si Lo Lau commune) shared: Since the water supply project was built, people's lives have changed a lot. Before, there was a lack of water, making everything from cooking, bathing, raising livestock and growing crops difficult. Now that there is clean water at home to use, people no longer have to work hard, and their health is also better. People are excited, feel secure in doing business and taking care of their children. The lives of people in the village are therefore more stable.
People of Seo Ho Thau village have water to use right at home.
Lieutenant Colonel Phung Minh Dung - Deputy Head of Economic-Defense Group 356 shared: Seeing the excitement of the people, we are also very happy, when the water shortage area, after nearly 1 year since the water supply project was put into use, the life of each household has been significantly improved, the people are assured to stay on the land, stay in the village, join hands to build the homeland, protect the Fatherland's border. That is the greatest encouragement for the officers and soldiers of the unit.
