The French leader said the EU would impose retaliatory tariffs after his US counterpart Donald Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on bloc goods imported into the US.

If tariffs are imposed, "Europeans will retaliate and therefore there will be reciprocal tariffs. Because we have to defend ourselves," AFP quoted President Macron as saying at a press conference in Porto with Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro during his official visit to the country.

"We must not act weakly in the face of these (tariff) measures," said Macron. The Montenegrin Prime Minister also affirmed that Europe must, of course, retaliate with the same level of tariffs as the US is using.

Trump decides to impose tariffs on neighbors; Canada says it will 'respond strongly'.

The White House announced on February 26th that it would impose a 25% tariff on EU goods, including Canada and Mexico, starting next week, while China faces an additional 10% tariff.

President Trump said the new tariffs would target products like cars, accusing the EU of taking advantage of the US.

On the same day, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged Canada and Mexico to follow the US in imposing tariffs on China if they want to reverse President Trump's decision to impose a 25% tariff on the two neighboring countries.

According to Reuters, Mr. Bessent said Mexico has proposed following the US lead in imposing additional tariffs on imports from China, and suggested that Canada should follow suit. It is unclear whether Mexico wants to apply the current 10% additional tariff or the 20% tariff that the US will begin implementing next week.

China has not commented on the information.
