"As expected, the current energy crisis is forcing the European Union (EU) to be more realistic and begin to correct past mistakes. They desperately need Russia to survive," Dmitriev wrote on his X page on May 31.
This comment was made by a senior Russian official after Bloomberg reported that the EU was considering temporarily freezing the price ceiling on Russian oil, in order to prevent energy price shocks amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East involving Iran.
Last year, the EU established an automatic mechanism to cap the price of Russian Ural oil at 15% below market price every six months.
The current price ceiling will be reviewed next summer. This mechanism prohibits European companies from providing services such as insurance and oil transportation at prices higher than the ceiling.
Energy prices have risen sharply due to the conflict surrounding Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Bloomberg, the price ceiling for Russian oil is expected to be raised from the current $60 (set by the G7) to $65.
To avoid this, the EU proposes keeping the price ceiling at its current level. Another option is to suspend the automatic mechanism until the end of the year.
