Accompanying Da Lat for the goal of becoming a creative music city

With many art and music activities held throughout the year, “Pho Ben Doi” is currently one of the leading units in Da Lat City in accompanying and contributing to making Da Lat a creative city of music.

• MASSIVE AUDIENCE REACH

Established in 2016 in Da Lat, “Pho Ben Doi” with the full name “Pho Ben Doi Creative Space” is a multidisciplinary activity center carrying out many art projects, not only in Da Lat but also expanding to many places in the country.

According to Mr. Nguyen Trung Hien - Director of Pho Ben Doi: "We take connection as the heart of all activities. Connecting with local authorities, experts, artists, domestic and international organizations to spread the message of heritage conservation, environmental protection towards sustainable development through art forms,education , community activities and tourism".

Since 2016, Pho Ben Doi has collaborated with domestic and international partners, experts, and artists to successfully organize many cultural and artistic activities in Da Lat City.

In particular, according to Mr. Hien, there are 4 art projects that his unit is implementing, including "Creative Space Pho Ben Doi - Creative Studio, established in 2020; Dalat Art Map Project, 1 of 3 key initiatives when Dalat started participating in the UNESCO Creative Network (UCCN), starting from 2020; Art Book Project "Dalat - Art Walk", starting from 2018 and Pho Ben Doi Music Project including activities such as regular community performance programs on the open stage (Open Stage from 2023 and music masterclasses on classical music works (Masterclass), workshops and music summer camps.

“All four of our projects are medium and long-term, with careful research and implementation from content to aesthetic elements, with local inheritance and sustainable creativity; directly contributing to diverse and interesting cultural and artistic experiences for city residents, domestic and foreign tourists,” said Mr. Hien.

Up to now, Pho Ben Doi has organized nearly 200 cultural and artistic programs, including over 50 music-related programs from performances - seminars - lectures; nearly 100 thousand audiences have accessed cultural and artistic events with content and quality selected and implemented through coordination with prestigious domestic units, experts and partners.

As in July 2023, Pho Ben Doi organized a Music Workshop in Da Lat with the support of UNESCO Vietnam and professional units and partners in the music field.

Earlier this year, in January 2024, Pho Ben Doi also organized a Music Seminar in Da Lat with the participation of domestic and foreign experts and artists. In April 2024, the Vietnam Classical Music Festival (VCMF) was held for the first time in Vietnam, co-organized by Pho Ben Doi, Vietnam Youth Music Institute - VYMI and Vietfest in Da Lat with a total of 15 programs and the support of many domestic and foreign units.

Pho Ben Doi also organizes major international events with the British Council in Vietnam, the French Institute in Vietnam, and the Austrian Embassy in Vietnam. In addition, it regularly organizes monthly music performances and seminars in the locality. Since October 2023, the unit has organized 7 such programs in Da Lat.

“It is worth mentioning that our monthly or quarterly programs are carefully selected and receive positive responses from many Da Lat people of all ages, especially young students from local schools,” said Mr. Hien.

On October 31, 2023, Da Lat City was officially recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as the next member of Vietnam to join the UNESCO Global Creative Cities Network in the field of Music.

• NEED TO STRENGTHEN PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP

Pho Ben Doi has planned many activities for itself in the coming time, especially music events.

"We hope to actively contribute to realizing the city's orientations and visions so that Da Lat is worthy of the title of Creative City in the field of Music by UNESCO," said Mr. Hien.

Pho Ben Doi will coordinate with Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music and Arietta Vietnam, Saigon Classical Music,... to organize a series of performances - seminars on topics to attract music experts (artists, music speakers, organizers, professional teachers,...) in Vietnam to come to Da Lat to share knowledge and raise awareness about music education for the community.

Pho Ben Doi also commits to coordinate with experts, guest artists, and UNESCO Vietnam to organize seminars with the participation of experts and prestigious domestic and international music units; organize music summer camps, popularize music education, and build a local music-loving community such as the Slide on Strings Summer Camp model, VYO (Vietnam Youth Orchestra); organize regular domestic music festivals in Da Lat to contribute to promoting local tourism development; organize national and international piano competitions for semi-professional and professional audiences; create an environment for developing high-quality music human resources and create an investment environment for local businesses in the creative and music fields.

To realize the commitments when participating as a member of the network of creative music cities, according to Mr. Hien, Da Lat in the coming time needs to strengthen public-private partnerships (PPP); mobilize resources from society; establish a development fund, support sustainable cultural and creative business models. In addition, the city needs to establish an independent advisory board in the field of creative culture to advise and support the city government.

“For Da Lat to develop sustainably, in the general vision and orientation, the creative industry is also one of the pillars to help develop the sustainable economy alongside the pillars of education, tourism and agriculture,” Mr. Hien shared.
