Nearly 221 billion VND to care for and help Agent Orange victims

Da Nang City was identified as one of the dioxin “hotspots” in Vietnam after the war, in which Da Nang airport was once the largest warehouse of toxic chemicals/dioxin, accounting for 35% of the total amount of dioxin used during the war in Vietnam. Here, the dioxin content in the soil in some places exceeded the standard by 365 times.

On January 5, 2005, the City People's Committee decided to establish the Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin in Da Nang City. The Association was launched on January 22, 2005 and has been in existence for 20 years.

After 20 years of establishment and development, the Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin in Da Nang City has achieved great results. The Association has mobilized nearly 221 billion VND; of which, mobilized from foreign organizations and individuals more than 90.6 billion VND to care for and help victims of Agent Orange, build facilities for boarding children who are victims and build a detoxification sauna facility to serve people exposed to Agent Orange/dioxin.

Along with that, the Association supports home repairs, livelihood support, regular care, scholarships, wheelchairs, emergency assistance, gifts... for nearly 103,000 beneficiaries.

At the same time, establish a Center for Boarding Care,Education , and Vocational Training for 90-150 Disabled Children; organize many meaningful programs such as "Joining hands to ease the pain of Agent Orange", the program "Tet for the poor and victims of Agent Orange" ... to bring joy and ease the pain of Agent Orange victims.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairwoman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi acknowledged and commended the achievements of the Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin in Da Nang City over the past 20 years.

“Since its establishment, the Association’s activities have encountered many difficulties, especially in mobilizing resources, experience in organizing and building the Association and building regulations for establishing and managing the Fund. However, with the leadership and direction of the City Party Committee, People’s Council, People’s Committee, Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the city and the help and guidance of the Central Association, the City Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin has been increasingly consolidated and developed,” said Vice Chairwoman of the City People’s Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi.

According to Vice Chairwoman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi, the goal by 2045 is for Da Nang to become a large, ecological and smart city, a center for startups, innovation and a livable coastal city of Asian stature.

To achieve that goal, social organizations in general and the City Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin in particular need to innovate their methods of operation, change their approaches and improve their effectiveness in connecting, mobilizing resources and supporting and helping victims of Agent Orange.

In order for the Association to operate more effectively in the coming time, Vice Chairwoman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi suggested that the Association strengthen people's diplomacy, create conditions for domestic and foreign organizations and individuals to have a deeper understanding of the Agent Orange disaster on the Vietnamese people, protect the legitimate rights and interests of Agent Orange victims; at the same time, have sympathy, join hands to support and help Agent Orange victims.

At the same time, promote more effectively the program "Joining hands to ease the pain of Agent Orange", the program "Tet for the poor and victims of Agent Orange" and other methods of mobilizing legal resources to help, contributing to bringing joy to victims of Agent Orange.

Focus on and pay attention to building strong Associations at all levels; advise well the Party Committees and authorities at all levels, closely coordinate with the Fatherland Front and mass organizations to promote effectiveness and take good care of Agent Orange victims.


Head of the City Party Committee's Mass Mobilization Commission Tran Thang Loi awarded Certificates of Merit from the City People's Committee to collectives with outstanding achievements in implementing the emulation movement "Joining hands to ease the pain of Agent Orange" in the period 2005-2025.

Vice President Nguyen Thi Anh Thi requested all levels, sectors and localities to continue to pay attention, coordinate and create favorable conditions for the Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin of Da Nang City to continuously develop, participate with the city in helping vulnerable groups; study the Association's proposals to advise the City Party Committee and People's Committee to assign tasks to the Association in accordance with regulations.

On this occasion, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin presented the "For Agent Orange Victims" medal to 10 individuals; and commended 3 groups and 5 individuals with outstanding achievements in caring for and helping Agent Orange victims.

The City People's Committee awarded the Emulation Flag to the City Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin, and Certificates of Merit to 20 collectives and 15 individuals with outstanding achievements in implementing the emulation movement "Joining hands to ease the pain of Agent Orange" in the period 2005-2025.

Since 1975, the Agent Orange disaster has continued to seriously affect the environment, ecosystem, and destroy the health of thousands of people in the city. According to early-term figures, Da Nang city had over 5,000 people infected or suspected of being infected with Agent Orange/dioxin.

In October 2024, the Association conducted a review and counted more than 3,300 Agent Orange victims, nearly 1,000 of whom were children. Of these, 1,834 were people who participated in the resistance war and were infected with toxic chemicals, and 426 were children of people infected with toxic chemicals.
