According to statistics from the official website of the Olympics, as of 10:00 a.m. on August 1 (Vietnam time), a total of 41 sports delegations have won medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Among them, Asian powers such as China, South Korea, and Japan have competed very successfully. China is temporarily leading the Olympics with 9 gold medals, 7 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals. But so far, no medals have belonged to Southeast Asian countries. Southeast Asian sports are disappointing in the first days of competition at the Olympics. Like the Philippine delegation, gymnast Carlos Yulo, a two-time world champion, disappointed when he only ranked 12th overall in the all-around event and could not bring home the first Olympic medal for his country.
Indonesia was equally disappointed when 27-year-old badminton players Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and Jonatan Christie were eliminated in the group stage. Anthony Sinisuka Ginting won a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, while Jonatan Christie is the reigning Asian champion. Both were highly anticipated but returned home early. Thailand also had a poor start to the Games, with their boxing stars Thitisan Panmod and Jutamas Jitpong both falling early. The hope of the Thai boxing team now rests on the shoulders of only four boxers. The most prominent of them is Bunjong Sinsiri, 32, who had an excellent performance when he defeated Jesus Cova of Venezuela 3-2 in the round of 16 of the men's 63.5kg category. However, according to Thai media, the person most likely to bring home the first medal for the country is badminton player Kunlavut Vitidsarn. The 23-year-old is the current world champion in the men's singles and has also impressed to reach the round of 16 at the Paris Olympics. At the Paris Olympics, Thailand is the Southeast Asian country with the most athletes participating with 51, aiming to win 6 gold medals. Next are Indonesia (29 athletes), Malaysia (26), Singapore (23), Philippines (22), Vietnam (16)... Other countries are Timor-Leste, Laos, Brunei Darussalam and Cambodia, all with a maximum of 4 athletes participating in the 2024 Olympics. Meanwhile, Myanmar - the Southeast Asian country with the most Olympic appearances - with 18 times, has only 2 athletes attending this year's prestigious event.
