On January 3, the US administration expressed hope that South Korea would move toward stability and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the alliance between the two countries, emphasizing that the US and South Korea are ready to deal with "any external provocation or threat."
US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby made the remarks after South Korea's anti-graft agency called off an attempt to arrest President Yoon Suk Yeol, the official impeached for imposing martial law, following hours of confrontation between investigators and security personnel protecting the president.
"First, we hope that the government, the National Assembly , and of course the people of South Korea will work together toward stability," Kirby said during a virtual press conference. "Second, we are committed to working closely with the government of the Republic of Korea, including the acting president, to advance our common interests based on shared values, and we recognize and appreciate the focus that acting president Choi has placed on maintaining national stability."
Mr. Kirby also said the US expects the South Korean government to carry out the procedures stipulated in the country's Constitution, and reaffirmed that Washington will maintain communication channels "at all levels" with Seoul.
In addition, Mr. Kirby reaffirmed the "unwavering" commitment of the US alliance with South Korea.
"I know we say this word a lot, but when it comes to Korea, we are serious. We will continue to stand with Korea and the Korean people," the official added.
South Korea has been in political turmoil following Yoon's brief declaration of martial law on December 3 and his subsequent impeachment on December 14./.
