Jeju is one of the most famous places to see cherry blossoms in full bloom in South Korea. When mentioning beautiful cherry blossom viewing spots on the island, no one can forget the beauty of the cherry blossom avenue on Jeju Island – a place steeped in tragic love stories, such as the love story of Hong Yun Eh and Jo Jeong Jeon. This avenue, called Cheonongro, is the most beloved cherry blossom viewing spot on Jeju Island, with hundreds of cherry trees displaying their vibrant blossoms in the spring breeze.
Every cherry blossom season, this cherry blossom avenue on Jeju Island seems to witness the sadness of a forbidden love, as the falling cherry blossom petals resemble the tears of a girl who sacrificed everything for love.
Legend has it that during the Joseon Dynasty, a talented and wealthy young man named Jo Jeong Jeon was exiled to Jeju Island in 1777 due to conflicts within the royal court. There, he lived in loneliness and despair. Hong Yun Eh, the daughter of the family where Jo Jeong Jeon was imprisoned, secretly helped him, and they fell in love. In 1781, they had a daughter.
When Kim Si Gu, an enemy of Jo Jeong Jeon's family, became the governor of Jeju, he tortured Hong Yun Eh to force her to deny her relationship with Jo Jeong Jeon. Unable to bear the pain, she died, leaving behind a daughter less than three months old. Kim Si Gu concealed his crime by falsely reporting the truth to the court. After the truth was revealed, Jo Jeong Jeon was pardoned, but had to wait until 1810 to be reinstated. Upon returning to Jeju Island in 1811, he disregarded all welcoming ceremonies to visit Hong Yun Eh's grave, where he wept all night and erected a memorial to her. And the Hong Lang Road at the end of Cheonongro Street commemorates their tragic love story.
Standing amidst the cherry blossom-lined paths, you'll feel a sense of tranquility, like an invitation to return to cherished memories. These are moments you'll want to hold dear, as each petal gently falls in the breeze, as if whispering unspoken stories.
