In October, Lockbit said it had obtained “a large amount” of sensitive Boeing data and would release it online if the aerospace giant did not pay a ransom by November 2.
Boeing is a defense contractor and major partner of the United States. |
By the end of last week, the Lockbit hacker group announced on its website that Boeing’s data had been made public. According to records obtained by Reuters, most of the leaked data was dated as late as October 2023.
Boeing has also confirmed that some parts of the company and its supply chain have been affected by cyber security incidents. “We are aware of a ransomware attack and have released information that they claim they stole from our systems,” the company said in a statement.
The aircraft manufacturer, which is also a major US defense contractor, said it “will continue to investigate the incident and maintain coordination with relevant authorities and potentially affected parties.”
But Boeing said it “remains confident” the incident did not pose a threat to aircraft or flight safety. The company declined to comment on whether Lockbit had obtained defense data or other sensitive information.
According to cybersecurity firm Trend Micro, Lockbit's ransomware first appeared on cybercrime forums in January 2020, before spreading worldwide, with common targets being organizations in the US, India and Brazil.
According to the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Lockbit is the culprit behind attacks on 1,700 organizations in this country.
