The following article by Mr. Le Tan Thoi, a teacher at Nguyen Dang Son Secondary School (Cho Moi, An Giang ) shares his perspective on options for students if they fail to get into public high schools.
These days, when hearing information related to grade 10 admissions and streaming, I suddenly remember a story from a friend of mine not long ago.
That year, my friend had a child in grade 9, preparing to take the 10th grade entrance exam.
At the end of the school year, when carrying out the streaming work before registering for the 10th grade entrance exam, the 9th grade homeroom teacher synthesized opinions from many sources - subject teachers, class officers, comments from students in the same class... to make the most basic assessments of students' abilities, in order to orient them in appropriate directions after graduating from junior high school.
After consulting with the teacher and realizing that his child's ability was not really good, my friend still asked for his opinion and respected his decision: Take the exam to know his ability. When the results were announced, knowing that he did not have enough points to pass any of his desired public schools, he felt discouraged and intended to quit school. After giving his child time to reflect on his own thoughts, the husband and wife advised him to choose a vocational school. According to him, here, his child can both study a trade and study culture to get a high school diploma.

In addition, my friend's family owns a spare parts store that also maintains and repairs cars and is planning for his son to study auto repair to follow in his father's footsteps in the future.
My friend analyzed for his child that: Currently, if you drop out of school, you can only help your parents but do not have enough capacity to run the business yourself. Even later, with a 9th grade education and limited knowledge, you will encounter many difficulties if you want to expand your business. Meanwhile, if you graduate from high school, there will be many opportunities to develop the family business. From another perspective, your parents' business is not always favorable, so children need to have a stable career to take care of themselves. Moreover, when you have the conditions to continue studying in high school, why do you drop out? If you meet your friends who have completed their studies, will you feel guilty about yourself?
Through many conversations, my friend finally convinced his child to learn a trade and the family shared the joy of guiding their child.
High school is not the only path for junior high school graduates. For those who have a good learning mindset, taking the 10th grade entrance exam and getting an official place in a public or private school is a given. At that time, parents need to encourage and support them to know how to scientifically arrange between studying and relaxing to get good results in the exam. For students who are not really confident in their ability to take the 10th grade entrance exam, parents should encourage them to participate in vocational training.
From an economic perspective, if these students are lucky enough to be admitted to grade 10 but then due to lack of ability, they cannot continue their studies in high school and have to drop out, it will be a huge waste. The cost of taking care of their children to go to school for a school year is not small for low-income families or even families of workers and civil servants. All will be zero for students when they drop out of high school because their ability does not meet the requirements of the study program.
Meanwhile, if they study a trade, after 3 years, they will be granted a certificate and can find a job that suits their abilities through referrals from the school or local authorities. Currently, many vocational training institutions have output commitments or job referrals for students, so parents and students can rest assured.
In the current 4.0 stage, parents should change their thinking and behaviors that are still influenced by feudal education or customs and habits in the community through many generations with the mentality of respecting teachers more than workers. Having a stable job and developing one's legitimate abilities is a positive mindset that parents should imbibe, so that they can work with the school to have the right direction for their children after graduating from junior high school.
Not being able to get into public grade 10 does not mean that the door to the future is closed. Life always has many directions, the important thing is that each person knows how to live a good life and constantly strive on their journey.
