Recently, an incident occurred at a Florida beach (USA) that caused public outrage and even shocked the local police chief.
Officers reportedly tried eight times to wake Alyssia Langley and her fiance Timothy Stephens, both 27, as they lay on the sand at Daytona Beach on Saturday afternoon (March 16).
American television reported on the upsetting incident.
When the police woke the couple, they appeared confused. The couple was so drunk that when the police asked where their children were, neither of them could answer. Stephens immediately ran away, before falling to the sand and losing consciousness.
At the same time, their two children, aged 5 and 7, fell into the swimming pool of a nearby hotel without any adult supervision. Fortunately, the two children were unharmed and were helped to return to their parents safely.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said he found it hard to believe the children's parents could be so negligent when they read the arrest report.
The couple was completely bewildered and ran away when questioned.
“I read the report and thought, ‘Are you kidding me?’ I was really confused that someone would drive here and leave a 5- and 7-year-old child wandering around,” he told Fox 35.
According to Fox News, both Langley and Stephens are now facing child neglect charges, and Stephens is also facing charges of attempting to flee from law enforcement and possessing alcoholic beverages on the beach.
An open beer can was found near Stephen's hand, along with several empty beer cans and an empty whiskey bottle in a nearby cooler, and other open alcoholic beverages in the vicinity, the arrest affidavit said.
“These two people cannot take responsibility for themselves, let alone take care of two children,” Chitwood told Fox 35.
