German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius aims to purchase an additional 600 Taurus cruise missiles, amid continued pressure from Ukraine for the supply of this long-range weapon, according to Spiegel on October 25.
The German Air Force's Eurofighter fighter jet is equipped with Taurus long-range cruise missiles (moss green).
Currently, the German military possesses approximately 600 Taurus cruise missiles with a range of over 500 km, which are equipped on fighter jets such as the Eurofighter, Tornado, F-15, or F-18.
The missile, manufactured by the European military contractor MBDA, is designed to destroy high-value targets deep within enemy territory, such as command bunkers, ammunition depots, fuel depots, airfields, and ports.
Despite pressure from Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has repeatedly rejected requests for Taurus missiles, fearing that Kyiv could use the weapons supplied by Berlin to attack targets in Russian territory.
According to Spiegel , Secretary Pistorius now wants to purchase the more advanced Taurus Neo version, with the total deal worth approximately 2.1 billion euros for 600 missiles and the first delivery expected in 2029.
However, Mr. Pistorius is still seeking funding for this plan, with 350 million euros needed by 2025 to get the project started.
The German Ministry of Defence has not commented on the information.
Britain and France respectively provided Ukraine with Storm Shadow (French calls it Scalp) cruise missiles, and the Kyiv government's military said it had refurbished Soviet-era fighter jets to fit these missiles.
Russia warned Germany that delivering long-range missiles to Kyiv would lead to serious consequences and plunge the Ukrainian conflict into a new spiral of escalation.
