(LĐ online) - On June 2nd, at Ninh Gia Primary School, the People's Committee of Duc Trong district organized the Summer Opening Ceremony, launching the Month of Action for Children, the movement for all citizens to practice swimming to prevent drowning, and the 2023 Children's Olympic Day. Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Thuy - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of the district, attended and delivered a speech.

Over the past period, the protection and care of children has received close attention and investment from leaders at all levels, sectors, and localities to achieve priority goals for children, such as: organizing recreational, cultural, artistic, and sports activities to promote children's participation rights; organizing visits and gift-giving to children in particularly difficult circumstances; awarding scholarships to poor students who overcome difficulties; equipping children with basic knowledge and skills in safe swimming and drowning prevention at home and in the community to minimize drowning accidents in the area.
However, in reality, children and child welfare work still face many challenges and difficulties. Abuse, injuries, and drowning are serious problems for children. In the past three years, Duc Trong district has seen 18 cases of child abuse and 79 injuries to children; of which, 8 children died from drowning, and many children were injured or died in traffic accidents.
The movement to promote physical education and sports for children still faces many limitations. Many children live in difficult circumstances and are not guaranteed the right to play, recreation, and physical exercise. In schools and in society at large, an increasing number of children are addicted to games and mobile phones, and dislike social interaction; many teenagers are prone to forming gangs, engaging in fights, smoking, and having unsafe sexual relationships, leading to serious consequences for themselves.
To ensure the effective implementation of the Month of Action for Children and summer activities; the nationwide movement to practice swimming to prevent drowning; and Children's Olympic Day, contributing to the successful care, protection, and education of children, Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Thuy proposed that all departments, agencies, organizations, and localities always enhance their sense of responsibility and always pay special attention to children and children's affairs.
To implement a safe summer for children, ensure good coordination between schools, families, and local authorities and organizations in managing, supervising, and guiding children to play safely, healthily, and beneficially, and to prevent accidents, injuries, and drowning during the summer. Maintain and widely develop sports and physical training movements in general, and swimming in particular, linking physical education with intellectual, moral, and social skills education, improving health, physical fitness, and the stature of Vietnamese people. Organize children's clubs, teams, and groups; programs and activities initiated and implemented by children at the local level to teach children personal safety skills, self-protection against risks of violence and abuse, and drowning prevention...
At the launching ceremony, the District People's Committee presented 20 gifts to children with serious illnesses (1.5 million VND/gift); awarded 32 scholarships (1 million VND/scholarship) to disadvantaged children who have strived to excel in their studies; and the District Youth Union awarded 5 scholarships (500,000 VND/scholarship) to poor children who have overcome difficulties.
