According to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Long, Deputy General Director of NAPAS, passengers can use domestic NAPAS cards as well as international cards and e-wallets to pay when traveling on metro line 1 - Photo: N.TRANG

Speaking with Tuoi Tre, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Long, Deputy General Director of Vietnam National Payment Joint Stock Company (NAPAS) said so.

Mr. Long said: Since February 14, NAPAS has coordinated with Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Company Limited No. 1 to deploy NAPAS card payment service on metro line No. 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien). Accordingly, passengers can use domestic NAPAS cards as well as international cards and e-wallets to pay when traveling on metro line No. 1.

Just tap the NAPAS card on the control device at the entrance gate (tap-in) and after finishing the journey at the exit gate (tap-out), passengers have completed the payment transaction for the trip simply, quickly and very conveniently.

When buying a bunch of vegetables at the market, customers pay by scanning a QR code. Or many people pay for a cup of coffee by using their smartphones to scan.

Thus, there is no reason why we cannot apply modern, convenient and safe payment methods on public transport infrastructure, especially metro.

Take the metro - just tap your card in 1 second

Sir, can a bank card be used as a ticket when taking the Ho Chi Minh City metro line?

Yes, metro passengers only need to use their bank card to touch the reader at the ticket gate and the gate will automatically open. People do not need to queue to buy tickets, do not need separate tickets, monthly tickets, but can use their bank card to go through the ticket gate at the metro.

According to data obtained by NAPAS, the number of people using bank cards to go through the ticket gate on the metro is increasing very rapidly every week.

Implementing the digital transformation policy, since April 15, NAPAS has launched the service of digitizing domestic NAPAS cards on the Apple Pay application for payment and integrating payment for metro line 1.

This service allows customers to no longer use physical cards. With the digitization of NAPAS cards on mobile phones, users only need to touch their smartphones to the card reader on the ticket gate when taking the metro.

In addition to implementing card digitization, NAPAS is discussing with the Ho Chi Minh City metro company to expand the payment method using QR codes when taking the metro, which only takes a few seconds.

Specifically, NAPAS plans to deploy the QR code method displayed on the passenger's phone, the QR reader system at the entrance/exit ticket gate will read and make payment transactions for the trip.

Thus, metro passengers do not have to queue to buy tickets with cash, do not have to carry bank cards anymore, but use their smartphones to pay.

Enhance the experience for people

Could you please tell me how the fare will be deducted when using a bank card or smartphone to go through the ticket gate to take the metro?

The fare calculation process involves the communication between the payment system and the metro's automatic ticket control system.

When passengers use their bank cards or phones to touch the ticket gate, the operating unit system automatically calculates the ticket price and sends payment information to NAPAS to process payment transactions between NAPAS and banking institutions as a basis for debiting the cardholder's account.

Passengers just need to tap their bank card or smartphone for 1 second to take the metro.

How does using bank cards and smartphones instead of metro tickets benefit people and the economy ?

For people, using bank cards when taking the metro will solve the current problem of not having to exchange small denominations of money to buy tickets each time. At the same time, people also do not need to carry too many cards with them. As I shared above, passengers can completely use mobile phones, bank accounts, and domestic NAPAS cards to pay when taking public transport.

For service providers, businesses do not have to organize a department to sell tickets, then calculate the amount of change that must be returned if there is any when the buyer pays in cash, etc. Thanks to the electronic processing system, businesses can easily count and report information related to ticket revenue conveniently and accurately.

As for the budget, using bank cards, metro phones or other services will help reduce the cost of printing cash, storing cash...

Obviously, using bank cards when taking the metro has reduced inconvenience for passengers, reduced social costs, and at the same time promoted people's habit of cashless payment.

More broadly, the application of modern payment technology not only helps improve user experience but also contributes to promoting the development of smart urban transport systems.

For Ho Chi Minh City, the application of contactless payment technology on metro line 1 has contributed to bringing Ho Chi Minh City up to speed with the world 's smart transportation trends in modern cities such as Tokyo, Shanghai, London, etc.

NAPAS and 25 member banks Sacombank, BIDV, Agribank, TPBank, SHB , BVBank, VietBank, SeABank, NamABank, Vietcombank, Wooribank, Techcombank, VIB, NCB, VietABank, Bao Viet Bank, PBVN, Kienlongbank, Saigonbank, BAC A BANK, Eximbank, MB, ACB, OCB, Vietinbank deploy contactless payment solutions through NAPAS domestic cards.

Thereby, people can easily use these banks' cards to take the metro without having to use cash or buy paper tickets.
