As in previous years, the French Riviera city of Cannes has banned protests near the heart of the Cannes Film Festival. However, the courtyard of the Carlton Hotel, where about two dozen workers were protesting, was outside the ban because it is private property.

France has been the scene of strikes and protests for months, largely over President Emmanuel Macron's pension reform law, which raises the retirement age to 64.

"Young people don't want to work in the hotel industry because it's too hard, too tiring. So imagine a 64-year-old still working, it's practically impossible," said Ange Romiti, general secretary of the General Confederation of Labour (CGT).

Romiti added that the protesters were happy to welcome artists to Cannes, but wanted to use the festival, which runs until May 27, to help raise awareness about the hardships they face.

Dominique Chave, representing the CGT business federation, also said she wanted people to know the working conditions of the workers who helped welcome the stars and tourists at the Cannes Film Festival.

"The French create the glamour and glamour of Cannes, but behind it all the hotel, cafe and especially restaurant staff are underpaid and have terrible working conditions," Chave told Reuters . "When you go on holiday, you only see the good side of things. But you can't see the difficult working conditions."

Members of the electricity industry group CGT have threatened to cut off power to the Cannes Film Festival as part of a protest against President Macron’s reforms. Earlier this week, Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux said talks with the CGT had so far been positive.
