On June 30, TMZ reported that the Italian Minister of Culture contacted Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to propose organizing a martial arts match with billionaire Elon Musk at the Colosseum, also known as the Roman Arena in Rome.
The news site also said that Zuckerberg had forwarded the message to Dana White, president of the UFC (global mixed martial arts) tournament.
Meanwhile, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that “the match will probably be held at the Colosseum,” and shared a link to a movie scene depicting a battle scene at the Colosseum - one of the seven wonders of the world.
Zuckerberg is known to be a fan of Roman history, having expressed his passion for Augustus Caesar (the first emperor of ancient Rome) on several occasions. The Facebook founder is even said to have cut his hair short to imitate the emperor's style.
It is still unclear whether the duel between the two billionaires will take place. In an interview with The Sun , Elon Musk’s mother tried to persuade him to cancel the challenge, while the Twitter CEO’s father said his son “has no chance of winning.”
Musk had an hours-long training session with podcaster Lex Fridman this week, while the UFC president said both billionaires were “very serious” about the fight after spending more than 90 minutes on the phone with them.
The Colosseum has also hosted some major concerts, such as Elton John's show in 2005. However, all events are held outside the walls to ensure the ancientness of the venue is maintained.
The Italian government is currently restoring this world wonder relic, which means larger events can be held inside the arena, which could accommodate up to 80,000 spectators during Roman times.
According to the BBC , when the Colosseum's restoration and renovation is completed later this year, it will have a retractable stage that will allow for concerts and theatrical performances.
Meta Platforms, the Italian Ministry of Culture, as well as a UFC spokesperson all declined Insider 's requests for comment.
