Appearing on the program The Diary of a CEO O earlier this week (October 20), Jurgen Klopp confirmed that he refused to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson to lead MU , when he was still at Borrussia Dortmund.

Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement after winning the 2012/13 Premier League with MU. Since then, the Old Trafford team has spent a lot of money on shopping, changed many coaches but still could not return to the number 1 position in English football.

The year Sir Alex retired, MU talked to me. But they came at the wrong time. I still had a contract with Dortmund, I had a great team there and I would not leave for anyone, ” Klopp recalled.

The German coach pointed out that the main reason for rejecting MU was because he did not see common ground for the plan: “ There were some things in the conversations with MU that I did not like. They put forward the idea that we can have anyone we want. I sat listening and thought: This is not my project ”.

In the post-Sir Alex period, MU spent a record price in 2016– 89 million pounds to re-sign Paul Pogba from Juventus, and they also brought Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2021.

When asked if he would bring Pogba and Ronaldo back if he accepted to manage MU, Jurgen Klopp said: “ I don’t want Pogba to come back. He is an excellent player but re-signing like that is usually ineffective.

Or like with Ronaldo, one of the two best players in the world , along with Messi, but bringing back an icon never helps .”

Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool last summer, after nine seasons of success and stature at Anfield. He is currently Head of Global Football at Red Bull.
