Ferrari suspected of 'circumventing the law'

At the Hungarian GP, Charles Leclerc's SF-25 was suddenly questioned about the validity of its design, after direct competitor George Russell voiced his doubts and pointed out the abnormalities.

The SF-25 continued to be suspected of having an invalid design.

Speaking candidly after the race, Russell said: “When I saw his (Leclerc) car was unusually slow, I knew something was wrong. The Ferrari was glued to the road – they must have had to increase the tyre pressure to compensate.” The Briton did not hesitate to point out the unreasonable point in the technical data, which showed that Ferrari used the engine to reduce speed on the straights - where the floor is under the most pressure and is prone to wear.

Russell concluded with a cryptic remark: “Leclerc would not say his car broke the rules, but what we observed said otherwise.”

Russell’s accusations immediately brought back unpleasant memories of Ferrari’s Chinese Grand Prix in March, when both drivers were disqualified from the official results. Lewis Hamilton’s car (racing for Ferrari this season) suffered excessive floor wear, while Leclerc’s car was underweight.

In Hungary, Leclerc’s own radio comments also caused a stir. “It’s impossible to drive. We’re completely uncompetitive,” he complained as he fell further down the standings. Despite taking pole position, Leclerc was quickly passed by both McLaren drivers after 40 laps, before Russell caught him. The main culprit was Ferrari’s poor pit stop strategy – once again raising questions about the Scuderia’s technical ability.

There has been no official announcement from the FIA about the suspected violation, but if it is discovered, Ferrari could face a big shock - especially when the team is betting on a new suspension upgrade to save the 2025 season. The crisis could extend beyond Hungary and into next season, if the Maranello team does not quickly correct the root cause.
