FIFA Club World Cup 2025 and the battle for money

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is indeed tough on European teams. However, many big teams are still trying their best to prepare for the big matches in this tournament for a very practical goal: money.

On the morning of June 26 (Vietnam time), two big European teams, Inter Milan (Group E) and Dortmund (Group F), will enter the decisive matches for that goal. If they lose to River Plate, Inter Milan will be eliminated if Monterrey wins against Urawa Red Diamonds - a very likely scenario. Even if they draw, Inter Milan will still be eliminated if Monterrey wins against Urawa by 2 goals. When you combine these two scenarios, Inter Milan fans have reason to fear for their team.

Are coach Cristian Chivu and his team worried? The answer is definitely yes. The FIFA Club World Cup may not be as impressive as FIFA advertises, but the huge prize money is real.

In the group stage, each win is worth $2 million, and reaching the round of 16 adds at least $7.5 million. Reaching the quarterfinals adds $13 million, reaching the semis adds $21 million, and reaching the finals adds $30 million.

Don’t forget that Inter Milan have reached the Champions League final twice in the last three years. They may not be as strong now, but reaching at least the semi-finals is still the target for the Italian team. From that perspective, Inter Milan will lose more than $40 million if they lose tomorrow morning’s match against River Plate. For a team that is not as rich as Inter Milan, the amount of money in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is too much.

Similarly, Dortmund are also under pressure to play for money. In Group F, the German team also has 4 points and is ranked second in the group due to a lower goal difference than Fluminense. The gap with the third-placed team (Mamelodi Sundowns) is even only 1 point.

However, Dortmund are much more comfortable than Inter Milan as they only have to face Ulsan HD - a team that is both weak and unmotivated.
