FIFA has just made a landmark decision when it announced the expansion of the number of teams participating in the Women's World Cup from 32 to 48, starting with the 2031 edition hosted by the United States.
This means the tournament will consist of 12 groups of four teams each with 40 additional matches, increasing from 64 to 104 matches and making the tournament last an extra week.

The Women's World Cup has expanded from 24 to 32 teams for the 2023 edition in Australia and New Zealand. The number of teams participating in the 2027 edition in Brazil will remain unchanged.
However, by 2031, the number of teams will increase significantly as FIFA President Gianni Infantino has affirmed that the decision to expand is not only to increase the number but also to be an overall development driver for women's football.
"It is not just about having 16 more teams at the Women's World Cup, but also about taking the next steps regarding women's football in general by ensuring that more FIFA member associations have the opportunity to benefit from the tournament to develop their women's football structures from a holistic perspective," said Gianni Infantino.
For Vietnamese women's football, this is an extremely positive signal. After participating in the Women's World Cup for the first time in 2023 and never attending the Olympics, our golden girls are in the process of transferring and developing young forces.
Expanding the number of teams will make the opportunity for the Vietnamese women's team to participate in the world's largest playground more realistic when the "Golden Dragons" are always considered the top team in Southeast Asia and are in the group of 7 strongest teams in Asia after Japan, South Korea, North Korea, China, and Australia.
