In previous World Cups, FIFA only allowed teams to register a maximum of 26 players. However, FIFA is looking to allow teams to register 4 more players at the 2026 World Cup, increasing the number of slots by 4.

This decision by FIFA comes from the fact that the 2026 World Cup has been increased to 48 teams, so the number of matches is also greater.

Registering more players gives coaches more options, which can improve the quality of the teams. It is important that the players are rotated, rested and physically fit.

Up to this point, the 2026 World Cup has determined 28 participating teams including: host USA, Canada and Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Uruguay, Colombia, Paraguay, Japan, South Korea, Iran, Uzbekistan, Jordan, Australia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Cape Verde, South Africa, Senegal, Ivory Coast, England and New Zealand.

FIFA is expected to draw lots for the 2026 World Cup in the US on December 5. At that time, the 2026 World Cup will determine about 42/48 participating teams. The 2026 World Cup will take place in the US, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
